Yeah, that's what this story is.
Chapter Five: The Destruction Zone
-=Day Two=-
2:35 PM
“This is terrible.”
Jen and CJ stood standing the corner of Squire Road, in Revere. They stood along with dozens of other police officers, among the wreckage and charred remains of…everything. They could see over the skylines billows and billows of smoke darkening the air. Sirens echoed all around. Almost every building in sight was burned to the ground. It was horrific.
CJ shook off his shock, then looked over at Jen and tapped her shoulder. She shook off her own shock and nodded and they headed towards the mass gathering of officers.
“Curley, Palmer, get over here!” They jumped slightly at the bellow. They quickly made their way over to Lieutenant Hudginson. The tall, white-haired man stood in a dark blue jacket with police officers surrounding him. His white beard was ruffled yet groomed. He adjusted his sun glasses as Jen and CJ made their way in front of him.
“You two are late. Where have you been?” He said. His voice was rugged and gruff.
“Sorry sir, we had a previous engagement. What’s going on?” Jen asked.
“What do you think is going? Practically all of Revere is in shambles. We have hundreds dead, including police officers and I’ve been up and here since six in the morning. I am tired and so far, no government official has shown up like I’ve requested. And here you two are, showing up to this devastation late.” Hudginson yelled.
“We’re sorry, sir. We’re here now. What do you want us to do?” CJ asked.
“Look for bodies, you jackasses! See if you can find any survivors. Take Ames with you.” Hudginson said.
Jen and CJ exchanged quick looks. Andrew Ames was Jen and CJ’s other partner. He was one of their close friends on the force and a great person to be with outside of the office. He hung out with the group occasionally and was a secret romantic crush of Samantha’s. At mention of his name, he came striding over to CJ and Jen. His short brown hair and brown beard brought out his deep brown eyes.
“Hey guys, what are we doing?” He said.
“You three are looking for survivors. Now get moving!” The Lieutenant bellowed. The three officers nodded and headed off towards the remains of the movie theatre.
As they stepped over the fallen gates around the parking lot, Andrew spoke up.
“How was the party you guys?” He asked with a small smile on his face.
“It was fun, until we saw this mess.” CJ said plainly.
“Yeah, sorry I couldn’t be there. I was on duty.” He said.
“Thank god you weren’t on duty here.” Jen said. A hint of concern was in her voice.
They moved through the debris of destroyed cars, fences and rubble looking for sign of life. The sound of their boots crunching against cement was the only sound that could be heard. It was eerie to all three.
“So what are they saying about who did this?” CJ asked.
“All we have to go on is they ‘eye witness’ reports. Figures dressed in black that can shoot lightning. Crazy, isn’t it?” He said
CJ and Jen shot each other quick looks before Jen responded. “Yeah, crazy.” Both of their minds wandered back to five years ago, when “crazy” happened to them and brought them together. What was happening to them had seemed crazy at the time. And that’s what scared them even more now.
They made their way to a flipped bus. As they got close, they saw a hand sticking out from the debris. All three quickly dashed over and started moving the rocks, desperately trying to uncover the body. Finally, they broke through and revealed an elder man. His face was cut and bruised…and pale. Andrew grabbed the man’s wrist and checked it for pulse. Jen and CJ stared at him as he slowly and solemnly shook his head. CJ shook his head as Jen stood up quickly, quite angry. Andrew continued to uncover the body after the other two stood up and looked over the rest of the parking lot.
“My god, look at this you two.” He said as he revealed the body. His two partners turned around and looked. Their faces turned to confusion and they both knelt down. “His entire chest plate has been fried. It’s almost like he’s been burned by fire or electricity. He must have been caught in the fire from this bus. Isn’t it odd though…his face isn’t burned.”
“That is weird. How could that have happened?” CJ asked.
“No idea.” Jen responded.
All three of them stood up and looked around. The destruction seemed to cover the entire world. It was almost like they were the last three people on the Earth. Dark rain clouds were moving in on the horizon. Andrew, CJ and Jen all stared at them blankly. Each one had a different thought on their mind. CJ looked down at the body again. Images flashed in his mind of the too many bodies he had seen. And they all started five years ago…He thought. He looked quickly at Jen. Could all this destruction be related to that? Could it be possible…that this is the Empire’s work? Could they have opened a portal again? No, no it can’t be. I refuse to believe that…
It’s not possible.
