Chapter 1: Same Old Day

-=The First Day=-

The day was calm. The air was bitter and cold, the temperature below freezing. Snow had covered the ground all over Melrose. There was no wind so there was no added wind chill. But it felt dry. Dry and cold. The suburban area of the city seemed to be a completely different land. Especially Mount Hood. The sky was clear and the sun was shining down brightly on the snow covered ground of the golf course mountain. A large pillar statue stood at the top of one of the hills, looking over the rolling hills and woods below. It was a dedication for all the people who died five years ago from the invasion of
Empire. A list of all deceased was etched into its flat side. Frost and icicles hung from its hard stone form as its shadow extended its way down the hill. Right in front of it, a small little rock stood imbedded in the ground. Frost clung to it as well but it was still readable. “In Memory of Ian Allan: An Unsung Hero.” It was a cold, calm day.

Liza Nagle stood quietly in front of the memoir, her arms crossed in front of her. She was wearing a heavy brown winter jacket. Her hair was still long and brown, but it was tied up in a ponytail. Her eyes were glazed over in memory, tears dried and frozen against her face. She let out a deep sigh before bringing her right hand up and wiping under her eyes. She then looked back at her friend’s stone.

“I miss you so much, Ian.” She said softly, more tears emerging from her eyes. She closed her eyes and shook her head gently. The sound of crunching snow caught her attention and she turned around to see a silver car pulling up and parking next to her own red car. She quickly turned around and tried to wipe her tears away. She heard the car door shut and she did her best to put on a smile as she heard footsteps come closer to her.

“I thought I might find you here.” A man’s voice said. Liza chuckled as Sam Biancuzzo came up beside her. His large body was defined by his black trench coat. He stood much taller than Liza; almost two heads above her. His glasses reflected the sun as he looked at Liza through them. He had grown a small goatee that brought out his face much more than when it was bare. He put on a soft smile, out of politeness.

“What makes you say that?” Liza asked him, giving him an appreciative smile back.

“Well, I called your apartment and no one picked up. So that meant that both you and Jeff were out and about. Jeff managed to pick up his cell phone and he told me that you were going somewhere to visit someone. I quickly concluded that you must have meant here, by our dedication.” Sam explained to a laughing Liza

“You know, sometimes you’re too smart for your own good.” Liza said, coming down from her laughter.

“Hey, I’m a physicist. It’s my job to make intelligent deductions.” He chuckled back. They both continued laughing for a minute before falling eerily silent. They were both staring into one another’s eyes. Liza broke the contact and looked back at the rock.

“How are your Masters’ studies going?” Sam asked.

“Oh, it’s great. I love the sports recreation program. It’s really defined and in-depth. And I’m good at it! I really feel like I’m going to make a great sports coach.” She said excitedly.

“Yeah, I know you will. You have the energy for it.” He said.

“How’s the lab? Any scientific breakthroughs?” Liza asked.

“Not really. We’ve been testing different elements and focusing energies with them and such. It’s really complicated and, sometimes, aggravating when it comes to dealing with the elements on Earth.” Sam said. Sam worked as a scientist in a lab in Boston. He and his colleges had been working on focusing the energy of the elements in this world to create a portal, similar to the one that the Empire used to get to Earth. Sam first provoked the idea because he was determined on opening the portal back to the world that Jeff, Jen, Liza, Samfa, David, Natalie and Garret came from. He was convinced that Ian was still alive in that world.

“You’re putting a lot into this project, aren’t you?” Liza said softly.

“Of course I am. I want to get Ian back. Or at least, see what happened to him.” He responded. “That’s why Cameron comes and works there too. He wants to help.

Liza stood silently. Her thoughts ran through all of their friend’s faces. They all have done so much for us here. They really helped us get through a really hard time. Now look at us all now. I’m in college for sports rec. Natalie is in college for theatre. Garret owns his own karate school. Jeff is a certified genius and a teacher at Boston University. Samantha is going to school to be a teacher. Jen works for the police department and David is working at Melrose City Hall. And it’s all because they took us in when we were new to this world.

“You still there?” Sam asked. Liza shook off her thoughts and turned to Sam.

“Yeah, sorry. I was just thinking about you guys and how you’ve helped us. She said.

“Ah, it was the least we could do. You saved us all and our world from chaos.” He responded.

They smiled softly to one another again. Then they looked again at the memorial.

“What do you think is meant for us all? In the future, I mean.” She asked him.

“It’s hard to tell sometimes. We’ve managed five years together and look at us now. We’re all mature adults. We’re not kids anymore. Granted, we went through a scary and horrific time, five years ago, but I don’t think we’ll have to deal with anything along those lines anymore. The Empire must have been destroyed in your world or they would have re-emerged by now. We’re safe. And we’ve moved on. I mean look at Tony and Haley; they just got married to one another. And we all have jobs and schools to help us all become successful. I think we all have a bright future ahead of us.”

Liza smiled softly. He has a way to making us feel safe with his words. “Thanks Sam. I really appreciate you saying that.”

“Don’t worry about it. Now let’s say we get out of this freezing cold and we go to lunch. Doesn’t that sound good? I think Paula and Samfa will really enjoy seeing you.

“Yeah, I’d like that.” And with that, they took one last look before heading back towards their cars. Liza climbed into her red car and started it up. As Sam opened the door to his own car, he felt a cold wind start up. It sent chills down his spine as he felt it blow, towards the memorial statue. He shook it off and stepped inside his car.

As his car started up and began to pull away, a cloaked figure slowly walked out from behind the pillar statue. It watched after the two cars driving away with an eerie silence. It then walked slowly around the pillar more and turned, standing in front of Ian’s rock. A guttural growl emerged from under the hood. The wind was blowing harder. A long pang sounded out, like metal hitting something hard. A large slice ran down the middle of the rock, cutting the words dedicated to Ian in half. The cloaked figure continued to stand there, the wind blowing hard and different.

The wind of change.
