She slept in the cage.
I was beyond even trying to understand her. She would do what she wanted, when she wanted. I wouldn't ask any questions mostly because Faith never bothered to offer any answers.
When I'd brought spare blankets and pillows out for the couch she'd simply taken the stack from my hand. She headed, without comment, for the closet, and pulled the bars latched closed behind her.
She'd had to leave the door open, though, and I didn't bother to close it, nor the door to my bedroom. Sometime in the middle of the night I woke to moonlight on my pillow, and realized I was listening for the faint whuffling sound of her breath.
I'd gone, matter-of-factly, to let her out in the morning. She made coffee. I read the paper. Neither of us, thank god, wanted chatter at breakfast. I didn't let myself wonder if she'd be there when I got back.
Had she really become so instituionalized that she needed to sleep behind bars now? I found it rather perplexing to say the least. I had to admit that it was somehow comforting, her being locked up while I was sleeping and not on guard.
Reformed or not, there was still always that nagging suspicion in the back of my mind that she'd slit my throat while I slept.
Maybe she knew that suspicion existed and that's why she slept in the cage.
"Wesley!" Angel's voice barked at me, stirring me from my thoughts.
"Hello Angel. Did you need something?" I asked wearily of the newly appointed CEO to Wolfram and Hart. I wondered if I was paranoid or just distracted but I noticed something different about the way Angel addressed me now. Like he was constantly weary of me.
"Have you seen Gunn?" He asked me.
"Earlier. I believe he had an appointment this afternoon. Although I'm not sure with who." I wondered if I should tell Angel about Faith's reappearance in Los Angeles. However, Faith seemed desperate to stay hidden for the time being from everyone save myself.
I'd humor her for now, if only to hold it over her head later.
"If you see him, tell him I'm looking for him." With that Angel was gone from my doorway.
