I don't know as I found it any more disjointed than any other episode of SPN recently. *sigh*

I have to admit that I've not been as enthralled and engaged this season either (or last season for that matter). I'm hoping that Carver can inject some new (old) energy into the mix for S8 (yikes, I can't believe we're 8 years in already).

she had bad back problems and was on steroids and pain meds

I hadn't hear that but it would explain a lot. I find her performances aren't as sharp. I remember being blown away by her in 6x01 and thought her first scene in the hotel room was terrific--her eyes were all gleeful and menacing.

They set up Cas/Meg a while ago in S6

I suppose they did and banged that drum a couple of times quite loudly. I guess I just don't see angels as sexual beings whatsoever, so Cas with anyone just goes in my head and then out without much processing.

this is only the second time I can recall Cas and Sam having any kind of serious one-on-one interaction in the series and there are plenty of people writing Sassy, so...

I did like Sam and Cas talking. I've often wondered why it is that it seems like it's written that Dean is the one who forges deeper emotional bonds with other recurring characters (Cas, Bobby, Lisa, Ben) while Sam--who supposedly had a "normal" life and relationship--isn't.

they've never failed to have an interesting 1-2 punch in eps 21-22. But this season? I am big on the meh.

No kidding. Perhaps they're holding all their cards until the finale? Heh, or not. ;) I can't believe the season is practically over--I can't really remember many stand-out episodes this season so it feels like it almost never happened.

I can when I look at J2. Bobby, amusingly, looks very much the same, but you can note the changes in the two of them. That's one reason I find it so frustrating that the show keeps circling round and round in the same characterization for them. I feel like neither has gone anywhere really since S4.

Yeah, I also thought Rachel Miner was a great choice for a new Meg, but whatever her health issues are, they've drained a lot of the spark from her. I can't imagine why the show wants to push Cas/Meg though. I happen to agree with your view of Cas, although if he was married, clearly the show does not (which begs the question of what Dean was talking about when he again reiterated to Kevin that angels are junkless), but I just can't see the rationale there.

It's funny, I remembered your post here about the Cas/Meg thing because I'm one of the tag wranglers for SPN at the AO3, and I saw at least 4 new relationship tags coming in after that episode -- pairing Cas with Anais, with Kevin, and with Others. Of course, Cas/Meg was already a tag but clearly people were seeing opportunities everywhere.

It's happened so consistently since S2 that I can only conclude it's been deliberate. It was super obvious in S5, especially in Abandon All Hope, an episode dedicated to killing off Ellen and Jo, and Sam never has anything to say to them in the whole episode, not even when they know they're about to die. It was nuts.

Well they have an extra episode to work with this year, so you'd think this finale could have a long build. And in a way, with the tablet, they have, but it's lacking any tension for me. My only curiosity is what Bobby's role is going to be, because they've already killed him off once this season. Cas may be set to be the most killed character ever (except for Dean thanks to Mystery Spot) as he's currently tied with Sam, and none of those resurrections were even explained.

Every time I hear S1/S2 Sam and Dean's voices, I can't help but think "prepubescent" even though obviously they're not.

I feel like neither has gone anywhere really since S4.

Dean seems to be, for the most part, still dealing with his issues with alcohol and anger, although I feel like his issues with John have been tempered with time. I think Sam, though, has changed since S4. He's forgiven himself (mostly?) for what happened in S4/S5 and he made peace with John in 5x13. Even though I feel like the tension has eased from Sam and Dean's relationship this past season, their dynamic is still the same. I don't know if that's bec. the premise of the series remains static (brothers against all else, saving people, hunting things) or bec. the writers don't want to change it for fear of ruining a "good thing".

Cas with Anais, with Kevin, and with Others

Yikes. And those are good examples why fanfic thrives. Everyone can play in their own sandbox. ;)

I can only conclude it's been deliberate

Agreed. Although I can't think of a reason why.

Sam never has anything to say to them in the whole episode

No kidding, right! Argh. I've always wished there was some sort of conversation between Sam and Jo regarding what happened in BUABS.

it's lacking any tension for me

For me this finale this season has been the most unanticipated yet. If anything I was more curious to see how we were going to be left for S8 rather than looking forward to seeing what was going to happen to the Leviathans.

God has conveniently left the building.
