I believe that the best move any .com business has ever done must be Amazon.com's supersaver shipping--which conventiantly kicks in at $25 dollars. Many a time have I gone to Amazon.com in search of one book--only to find myself buying two or three books just so I can get the free shipping.
Damn them. Damn them for their evil scheme--for they hath gotten far more money out of me by this means then a standard bookstore.
For example today I wanted to buy a copy of the The Nag Hammadi Library whose cover price is $21.95 but was being sold on Amazon for $14.95. So its a $7.00 savings. Great thinks I, but wait--free shipping doesn't pump in unless I purchases $10.05 worth of extra books. And if I don't go with the free shipping it will completely negate the savings I'm getting off the cover price! So I end up buying a copy of The Once and Future King for $12.21 so that I'd get free shipping.
Now had I gone to the bookstore, I'd have only paid $21.95 instead of $27.93--Amazon got an extra $5 out of me.
It never fails. Whatever it is I want to buy from Amazon is always just short of the free shipping, so I always end up tagging an extra book onto the order to get it over the edge.
See? Aren't they evil?
