Concert Week 2009

All shows at the Majestic. 2 of them on the big stage even.

Monday: Probably the most interesting visual show. Samael, an industrial black metal band, used fog machines, lights, and fans for some reason so their hair was blowing straight up. They had a lot of energy and it reminded us of Rammstein. Suicide Silence also played. That's the most metal looking hardcore band I've ever seen. I would've expected them to sound like slayer. Anyway, the singer does this bird pose during breakdowns and I kept shouting squawk squawk. We missed Arsis but stayed for some Carcass, which had a couple guys from Arch Enemy. It was nice to see a death metal band and not a deathcore douchebag-fan band. Black Dahlia Murder also played but I'm not too big into metalcore. They don't have breakdowns or many solos, so it's just the same tempo every song.

Tuesday: This show was upstairs at the smaller stage. We saw Impending Doom, As Blood Runs Black, and the Acacia Strain. Impending Doom was surprisingly hard live for being a christian band. Acacia Strain also commented that "we seem to have the most fans in cities with the highest murder rates." I got pulled over after the show (St. Patty's Day) and they left because I took too long to find my registration. No ticket either. This was the day some idiot kept hitting me with his dancing and eventually injured his hand on my face.

Saturday: This show was huge. Probably around 750 people in a relatively small area. Ended up having 2 full mosh pits (or one mosh pit and one emo-flailing pit). Terror was the best band. One kid even died or got knocked out (since security called 911) just to get out of hearing the rest of their set. I can't blame them. The better bands were All Shall Perish and Winds of Plague, each with pretty epic sets. Winds of Plague is a goofy looking band but they got the crowd moving. Emmure played last but we left after a few songs because everyone was hardcore dancing by that point.

It's loud and full of morons, but sometimes you get to see a band playing really well and loving it. The crowd has an energy and it's not just a bunch of girls singing along like at other concerts. I'd suggest anyone to see a show like this at least once.
