Trying

So many things I've been trying to do lately. Visit LJ more regularly (preferably daily) because I enjoy it so much. Sort through the confusion that is Revenue Canada's tax information. Do more cleaning. Avoid prescription painkillers. I can't say I've had total success, but I can say I've made progress in all areas, so that's a positive thing. I've got my daughter's (complicated) income tax return figured out and all the documentation in order (or on its way), I vacuumed the house (which I hate doing because it always leaves me with pain in my back and leg), I also did most of the snow shovelling yesterday and this combined with the vacuuming would normally have me on those prescription painkillers but I've (so far) avoided them. And, here I am on LJ!

Happily, it's a balmy +6C (+44F) here today, which made me happy. Well it did until I got a message from a friend that it's 77F where she is and she's sitting on her porch in shorts. Grr. Tomorrow we get rain, and if it's a lot of rain, well, there's a LOT of snow out there, which means overloaded sewer systems and flooding in some parts of the region.

I read a vampire book called "A Quick Bite" by Lynsay Sands yesterday. It takes places in Toronto, Ontario where I grew up, which I thought would be neat, but in fact, I found it made it harder to believe the story I was reading. When you read sci-fi or fantasy you have to "suspend your disbelief", but I found it hard to do that this time. So, lesson learned; don't read sci-fi and fantasy books that take place in home territory. It's too bad, because it's a good-sized series, but one that I won't be continuing with.

And, on a completely different topic (yet again), I'm so disappointed that Russia's men's hockey team is out. Half of me wants Canada to play the USA in the final, and half of me wants us to play Russia (I'm a big fan of the Canada-Russia hockey series from the seventies). I just feel bad for Russia too, because they seemed to put a lot of importance on their team making it to (and winning) the final. I know that feeling; we felt the same four years ago when the Olympics were in Vancouver. But THAT final was phenomenal, so I'm looking forward to this one too, and keeping my fingers crossed that our guys are part of it.

To finish - Barbie in SI Swimsuit Edition? Because what - Mattel has decided, after years of denial, to embrace the sexism that she represents? Epic fail.

books, family, olympics
