Today had been the first (relatively) quiet day I've had since I don't remember when. If you don't count that my phone went off at 7 a.m. with a message from my daughter who forgot that a) it might be 12 noon in Scotland, but it's 7 a.m. in Canada, and b) I'm a night owl, so I am NEVER up at 7 a.m. unless I have to be. Later on we Skyped and got her student loan information updated (not a simple procedure when the student is studying overseas). Then my son and I had a nice lunch, just the two of us, and we wound up having a lengthy discussion about everything from politics to war to the nature of the universe. It was nice.
Hubby's gone to his mother's for a day or two to help her with some stuff, so with just my son and I here it's quiet peaceful and quiet. I watched the 2nd episode of Intelligence, the new series starring Josh Holloway (Sawyer on Lost), and so far I'm enjoying it - mostly. I did think that in the 1st episode Gabriel seemed to be saving Riley a lot, when Riley's supposed to be protecting him, but that issue didn't come up in the 2nd episode, so hopefully it won't be a recurring thing. I also watched the 1st episode of Bitten, the new werewolf series based on Kelley Armstrong's books. I expected more action for this series, but it's early days yet, so I'll have to wait and see how that one develops.
I've been on a sci-fi kick lately in books, especially classic sci-fi, so I just finished John Wyndham's The Chrysalids. It's kind of scary and sad that his story is still relevant today. Makes you wonder if the human race will ever learn to treat each other as equals. I'm taking a quick break from sci-fi to read Mitch Albom's "The First Phone Call From Heaven", which so far is....different. I'm not sure yet whether it'll be a hit or a miss for me. After that, I have a bunch of books lined up that I hope to get to. Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash", Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Dispossessed", Sheri S. Tepper's "The Family Tree", Philip K Dick's "Ubik", and Arnaldur Indridison's "Strange Shores" (that last one isn't sci-fi of course, it's a detective novel). There's a couple more on my list so I've got lots to keep me busy on those long nights when I can't sleep.
Tonight I'm going to watch either some more episodes of NCIS: Los Angeles (I don't know why I didn't like this show when it first came out, because I really like it now) or maybe some more MI-5 episodes (or maybe even some of each). I really do love these afternoons and evenings when I can just be on my own, and do as much or as little as I please. Yes, there's laundry to put away, but it's not going anywhere, and can wait until tomorrow.
