A Better Day

I'm feeling more my usual self today, so much so I went out and did a bunch of errands I'd been putting off. It's such a nice day today too, so it was nice to get out of the house for a bit.

Does it make me unpatriotic if I breathed a quiet sigh of relief when my son told me has decided not to sign up with the Armed Forces? I hope not. I'd have been proud of him if he had, but as a mom, I can't help that little bit of relief. The big stumbling block for him was that by the time he graduated from military academy he'd have to be bilingual. From day one, they issue orders for half the day in English and half the day in French. My son had a language problem as a young child, and we were told early on he would likely never learn another language (he basically had to be taught to speak English - his mother tongue - as if you or I were learning another language; it didn't come naturally for him). It's unfortunate, but the military lost the chance of having a good man. My son is now looking for an alternate career path; he does enjoy the video editing he's doing now, but the likelihood of ever finding a permanent job (one with benefits) in the industry are slim. He's always enjoyed making things, so he's now investigating becoming a carpenter, something he's done more as a hobby in the past. His grandfather was a carpenter, so he'll have all the tools he needs, that's for sure (his grandmother has kept them all).

Over the holidays, I got onto the British series MI-5. I had no idea that Tony Head guest starred in an episode, so it was a complete surprise (a good one) to see him in the show (another brilliant performance). Hugh Laurie (Dr. House) was also in an episode, but I didn't think he was that good. I do love the series though, and with 10 seasons in the can, there's lots more for me to watch.
