Still Alive

I can't believe I haven't been online for almost 3 weeks!!! To be honest, the pain has been so disabling my world had narrowed down to basics. "When do I take my next pill?" "Is the pain controlled enough that I can get to the bathroom on two canes?" I just live moment to moment, letting the days takes care of themselves. It IS getting better, but it's certainly in no hurry. The positive note is that I have lots of kitty friends during my convalescence. Miss D has appointed herself my guardian and protector (which in her mind means she's entitled to an unlimited supply of treats). Whoever else is on the bed, she has to be closest to me. This has resulted in some hilarious moments with Miss D trying to wrap herself around my neck and do a balancing act there.

My daughter has been a godsend. I can't say that enough. Even my son has been way more helpful than usual. All of which I'm truly grateful for. I think it's also given my husband a "wake-up" call in regards to exactly how much work I do around the house. Maybe he thinks Mary Poppins used to pop in and do all the cleaning, laundry, cooking, shopping, etc. He and my daughter went for groceries one night - bought them, carried them all in then put them all away and by the end he was saying over and over "That's a big job. Huge job!". Uh huh. So, maybe some good will come out of all of this.

I have GOT to get better soon because both my son and daughter have graduations in June and my best friend is also coming for visit (her dates are not changeable). On top of that I've promised my daughter to go with her to Montreal to see the Star Wars exhibit. It's apparently a huge deal and this is the closest stop to us on its tour. So, 7 hour drive here we come! We were planning out the trip today and had to try and guessimate where the protest marches were likely to be and avoid those areas. It's gotten pretty bad in Montreal right now, and the police seem to be pretty heavy-handed. We found a Best Western hotel that's got big comfy rooms, a fridge, pay movies, internet, free breakfast and a pool. That's good enough for us! It'll be about 30-minute drive to the places we will be going to which is fine. At least it keeps us out of the danger zone.

With all this extra time on my hands my daughter got the idea to finally do our Las Vegas scrapbook. We decided to limit it to just the time we went at Christmas (the most recent trip) and I must say it turned out well. Now we have a lovely reminded of our experiences there, from the Grand Canyon (my personal favourite) to the Blue Man Group, to the Bellagio's Dancing Waters, and so much more. I had a friend ask me for some advice recently about planning a trip to Las Vegas and while we were looking at hotels on the Strip on a map they said "Oh look, everything's close; we can just walk everywhere". I started to laugh and replied "Well yeah, if you're into long distance hiking". I had to explain that each hotel took up a HUGE city block, and suggested they go with a hotel theme that interests them then just buy tickets for the "Deuce" a bus that runs up and down the strip day and night and costs $2.00/day. A real bargain (not to mention foot-saver).

As a Canadian who lives where winters are cold and snowy some of the things that I got a kick out of there were simple ones: outdoor escalators for instance. One winter here and they'd have been garbage. Misters that spray across the sidewalks to cool people down. Of course I thought I'd died and gone to Heaven at the Star Trek Exhibit. I think that's gone now, which is so sad. I still have my bottle of Romulan Ale that I bought there - and my Tribble! Plus, in my world, after Sunnydale blew up, Andrew moved to Las Vegas and lived happily ever after working at the exhibit. Hmm, maybe it's time I watched the newest Star Trek movie again!
