"In an interview this week with "Relevant," a Christian magazine, Obama said prohibitions on late-term abortions must contain "a strict, well defined exception for the health of the mother."
Obama then added: "Now, I don't think that 'mental distress' qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term.""
-That doesn't mention physical health of the baby. What if it can be delivered without physical injury to the mother, but will then die within 2 weeks? Isn't it a woman's choice whether or not she wants to complete a pregnancy under those circumstances? Because that's what the vast majority of late-term abortions are.
-If he doesn't think that serious mental illness should be classified as a health problem, then I'm pretty sickened. Mental health is physical health, that's why people often need drugs as well as therapy.
-Women need to be the ones deciding this sort of thing for themselves, because no one else is in their shoes and nothing should trump someone's right to bodily integrity. You can't force someone to undertake a life-threatening or life-saving medical procedure, you can't force kidney-donations at gunpoint, and you shouldn't assume that 100 people in D.C. know more about a woman's decision to have an abortion than she does.
