As spring arrived in New Zealand the Apple tree in the backyard bloomed into life, green young leaves sprouting to let us know that it's survived winter and is still with us. It's the last apple tree in a double row of fruit trees - over the last few years several of the others have died on us leaving us with a need to replace the fence along that side of the section where the trees previously providing some screening from the neighbouring flat.

Just when Spring arrived this year I can't really say. Despite it now being summer there are still occasional days suggesting of both Spring and Winter even...

Meanwhile, I need a new Apple of another kind. My PowerBook G4 (17", final revision) is now four years old. At this time last year I looked briefly at replacements for it and decided to postpone the replacement for a year. While I can't run Intel only releases (nb: PowerBook) nor modern games, it works well for email, web surfing, playing my old collection of games and serving as the iTunes hub for our collection of iPods.

The current plan was formed last year and remains to buy an iMac for use at home, keeping the PowerBook for travel and occasional use at work until its battery begins to fade, at which point I'll pick up a 13" MacBook to replace it.

Just in time to upset my replacement plans however, Apple released new iMacs with a new design - which causes the plan a problem as I'm reluctant to buy first revision Apple hardware. And while the new i7 option sounds nice, as always people with problems complain louder than those with no problems...
