Tomorrow night is the kickoff of the
New & Emerging Writers Series
founded by me and
Poetmom! We can't wait. There are three fabulous poetesses reading their work:
• January Gill O’Neil (aka Poetmom), winner of The 25th Annual Eagle Tribune/Robert Frost Foundation Spring Poetry Contest
• Colleen Michaels, poet, essayist, & adjunct instructor, Montserrat College of Art
• Megan Mullin, MA candidate in creative writing, UMass Boston
The reading starts at 7pm in the screening room of the Regent Theatre in Arlington, and there'll be a shindig after at The Book Rack, Arlington's independent (new & used) bookstore.
Putting this together has been exhilarating. P-mom and I have done some creative projects before (we produced a literary magazine, Colophon, when we worked together at Houghton Mifflin, and are co-teaching a class this summer), but this one is the most exciting yet. It's something for the community to get involved with, and a way to showcase talent that doesn't normally get it's due. Developing it from scratch--getting organized, finding readers, securing a venue, generating publicity--has been a challenge, but everything has come together so well, I can't help but think this is something special. In any event, the night is sure to be special.
Our grand plan is to host three this spring (the next two are May 30th and June 27th), and then evaluate their success and do some in the fall. We're featuring up-and-coming writers; people who haven't had extensive publications yet, are in MFA/MA programs, but are serious about their craft. If you're interested in learning more, want to get involved, drop us an email at news [underscore] readings [at] yahoo [dot com]. Or, stop by tomorrow night:
The Regent Theatre • 7 Medford Street • Arlington, MA
The Book Rack • 13 Medford Street • Arlington, MA
Either, way, stay tuned for more about N•E•W•S!
