Well, so far I have been to 2 different days of Mosaic, which is a big cultural festival we have every year where you can experince the food, music, dance, and more of over 20 different cultures and pavilions. The places I have “visited” so far are:
  • Scotland - Bagpipes everywhere…and guys in kilts dancing around
  • Ireland (twice) - amazing dancing, great music, interesting names for food…
  • Korea - I have been officially welcomes to Korea, so does that make me Korean?
  • Ukraine - The Kiev special was insane (it’s 3 perogies, 2 cabbage rolls, a Ukrainian sausage, a slice of bread, and a pickle)
  • Greece - they have some cool rock music, though I didn’t understand the words
  • Philippines - they have a lot of jewelery
  • Italy (twice) - I had a heaping plate of spaghetti with the biggest meatballs I have ever seen (2 of them) and it came with salad and a bun…so filling
  • India - snake charmers, guys dancing around selling CDs outside, and an extremely energetic dance that randomly broke into hip hop/break dancing at one point. Also lots of curry.

The video above is from a dance performance at the Irish pavilion - for some reason I always forget how much I enjoy Irish music and dance until I go to Mosaic. I downloaded some music, so hopefully I won’t forget this year.

When New York was Irish (3:14)

I’ll sing you a song of days long ago
when the people from Galway and the County Mayo
and all over Ireland came over to stay
and take up a new life in Americay

CHORUS
They were ever so happy, they were ever so sad
to grow old in a new world through good times and bad
all the parties and weddings, the ceilis and wakes
when New York was Irish, full of joys and heartbreaks

We worked on the subways, we ran the saloons
we built all the bridges, we played all the tunes
We put out the fires and controlled City Hall
we started with nothing and wound up with it all CHORUS

You could travel from Kingsbridge to Queens or mid town
from Highbridge to Bay Ridge,
from up town to down
from the East Side to the seaside’s
sweet summer scenes
we made New York City our island of dreams CHORUS

I look at the photos now
brittle with time
of the people I cherished when
the city was mine
O, how I loved all those radiant smiles
how I long for the days when we danced in the aisles CHORUS

I might be going back again tomorrow - so maybe there will be another post - you never know.

video, stories
