There I was, standing under a nice tree, waiting for the bus to take me to work. Nothing unusual. I heard bird-like noises in the trees around me. Nothing unusual there, either. Then something hit my head. That something looked a heck of a lot like a pinecone. In fact, it was a pinecone. The very same pinecone featured in that there user icon. Very fresh, still with a little sap on it.
I looked up in the tree directly over me, and saw a crow. This crow was jumping up and down on the branch and, I swear, singing in triumph. "Caw-Ca-aw-Caw-Ca-aw!" over and over again. He seemed to be very pleased with himself, puffing his chest up and fully extending his wings. He managed to knock one more pinecone off the tree (ha! he missed me that time!!) before flying away.
The last time I heard a crow make that particular call was about 5 years ago. There was one older bird who liked sitting on the light standards directly in front of Das Mill, who always used the same distinctive call. He greeted me every day for almost a year, then disappeared.
So what does it mean when a crow throws pinecones at your head? Think he's trying to tell me something, or just introduce himself?
