In case anyone has ever wondered, homocidal owls do not get any nicer if you try the tactic of talking to them nicely, rather than calling them bloody featherbrained clods and throwing things at them.

I barely have the market cornered on homocidal creatures these days, but it was a statement I felt like making stand.

My father's barn owl, Tyto, once stole away one of those pigeon scaring owl statues from the top of a post office. But he's always been rather stupid.

Homocidal owls are most often stupid as well as being homocidal, so I'm not surprised.

Tyto's not that homocidal, he's just dumb as the proverbial post. He's actually rather kind, for his stealing ways.

It's Strix that's homocidal.

Strix fancies male owls too? She's . . . a she, right?

Strix fancies taking large, hopefully fatal bites out of people's veins, and apparently not much else. And the fellow at the store told me he was a he, but he also told me that he had a sweet personality and had just been there and was on discount because he had a bad leg. And I've never actually been of a mind to try to check for myself.

Hm, all things considered, I mean.

Well, I doubt it would be not on if Strix was a girl, unless you're talking about the large number of possible horrid jokes there, so.

Well, it does go against the natural order of things.

Perhaps. But I can think of worse ways things could, and also, one could argue that society as a whole is against the natural order of things, which would state that our lives be nasty, brutal, short, and full of parasites.

Which would be reflective of how things really are.

Well, yes. Of course.

It also wouldn't be very pleasant, now would it? When all's said and done, at least there's a veneer of something in these days, which means that, while things are still, well, dirty, brutal, short and full of parasites, you can sometimes forget that. And sometimes it's good to forget that things are like that, even for a second or two, right?
