The whole house was asleep - except for Howard and Vince. They were in the sitting room downstairs, propped up against each other, their legs hidden beneath the kotatsu, watching as the sky outside the window turned an unreal shade of blue.
Howard slowly sagged forward. Vince righted him.
"Come on, this was your idea. Stay awake!"
With a jerk, Howard snapped awake. He rubbed his eyes. "Should have gone to sleep, and then woken up early."
"No way, staying up all night's better."
Howard yawned. "It's this table. It's too warm under here."
"This thing's genius. I want to bring one home."
"We have central heating at home, we don't need one." Howard's eyelids started to flutter again.
"Come on! Don't you want to see the first sunrise of the year?"
"Mmm." Howard slumped, his head tilting to the side until it rested against Vince's shoulder. Vince sighed.
"All right, lumpy bones," he said, and with some effort maneuvered Howard until he was lying on the floor, his legs still tucked under the kotatsu. The first beams of sunlight drifted in through the window. Vince carefully leaned over and pressed a clandestine kiss to Howard's lips.
"First of the year."

A kotatsu is a special table covered with a blanket and with a heating unit underneath it so you can put your legs under it and keep warm. Most Japanese houses really don't have central heating ...
A big part of New Year's in Japan are the "firsts of the year". Hatsuhinode is the first sunrise of the year.
