Worm wrangling

As I mentioned about a month ago, I've been vermicomposting my organic waste, as part of a trial run by the City of Ottawa. Lately I've had to cut back how much I feed my worms, because the box seems to have quite a high moisture content (no doubt caused by making "smoothies" out of my organic waste so it's easier for the worms to process) and the ( Read more... )

Nice! As I understand it, that book is the definitive bible of vermicomposting. I should check it out too!

I'm glad I was able to help you with my own misfortunes. (: The vermicompost guide that the city gave me recommends putting down a "plastic sheet" on the grass outside, and dumping out the soil there, so the natural sunlight makes the little critters burrow down to the deepest depths. I didn't want to wait for my worms to drown, so I improvised a bit. Unfortunately, lacking an outdoors with a hose, I did a very shameful thing and threw out the shower curtain when I was done (in my defense, it proved a handy way to gather up the used soil from my repotted plants). I have one more old shower curtain I can use next time; hopefully by then I'll find a way to clean and reuse it, rather than negating whatever reduction in landfill traffic I'm causing by vermicomposting.

You're lucky you have a compost heap! Some apartment complexes have those, but mine isn't so forward-thinking. That's part of why the city is doing this trial, actually. Hopefully I'll learn what to do soon, and be able to contribute that knowledge back to the city!

That is indeed an adventure you had. (: Hopefully your next ones aren't as sharp and pointy!
