Interesting article about women being cast as the mother of an actor the same age of them:

The Back to the Future link doesn't really hold - the actor playing Marty's mother spent the majority of the film playing the 1950s version of the character, making her the same age as her 'son'. However, the rest of the points are very valid.

What the journalist doesn't mention is that this ties in to the idea that women are supposed to look unnaturally young, so that lots of people are losing track of what a natural 40/50/60 year old looks like. Casting Angelina Jolie as the mother of a thirty year old, making a 28 year old actor represent someone in at least their mid forties, is sending out the wrong message in my book. Yes, there are many actors with a huge playing range, and others who look older/younger than their chronological age, but there are also lots of women who are forty and look forty. In the real world, if not in Hollywood...
