And - an adaptation of the life of Jean Fagin Yellin, which is necessarily also an adaptation of the life of Harriet Jacobs, because why write a story about one deeply inspiring woman when you can write about two at once?Have you managed to put pen to paper on this one yet? It sounds like you had a lot of momentum going when you first talked to me about it, so it might be worth trying to just get thoughts/an outline/a few lines down, and see where that takes you, if you haven't already? idk. I don't see why you can't have her say exactly that and communicate the rest through other ways. Nobody ever says what they mean, and good fiction shouldn't try to have their characters say what they mean all the time. stop focusing on what she's saying. The words aren't as important as how she's saying them and what she's doing while she's talking. YOU'LL GET THERE, I HAVE FAITH I HOPE THIS LEADS TO SEX
I know but that's what I mean, she just keeps saying not what she's thinking and getting more and more indignant and I'm not at all communicating that on the inside she's being ~EATEN ALIVE~ with self-hatred, so it's just making it seem like the other character's annoying WHICH SHE ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE, AT ALL, and hence the stuckness.

lol about Light. Yeah, there's a bit missing in the young lad. I didn't really peruse your essay (just skimmed), but another telling thing about Light's mental state is his utter, utter disconnect with other people. Yeah, sure, he'll use them, and yeah, sure, he has his duty to his family, but he really has no human-to-human relationships. He didn't before he got the Death Note either according to hints from the manga. He's such a crazy cookie. But hot.
However, that's not to say that I don't absolutely love Light. Cause I do. Insanely. My favourite character in Death Note. Followed closely by Ryuk. Btb, there's not enough Ryuk/Light(/Ryuk) fic, and the stuff that is, scares even me.
I am fundamentally unsquickable, so I dig even the scariest Ryuk/Light...but now I *am* curious, how would someone go about making Ryuk/Light happen that wasn't at least a little frightening, I wonder?? Once somebody mentioned the idea of a bike gang AU where Ryuk is a leather-wearing member of the yakuza, hahaha, I guess that's one way.
There's this one fic. Omgsofuckingross. All about Ryuk's monster cock. And Light is moaning like a bitch in heat for said monster cock. There's also rapefic I never read. So bad. I should note that, no, I don't want Ryuk/Light porn. just fic. no porn, please. yuck.
I always want porn about Ryuk and Rem and I think there are ways to do it without making it squicky, but I'm a freak to whom "squicky" means very different things than it does to like, sane people. (For example, I have read some stuff where Ryuk just watches Light wank etc; I found it pretty line with his whole "humans are hilariously interesting" philosophy, so I liked it.) In general though, it would really be nice to see Ryuk as a character show up in more fic - his voice is an endlessly interesting and entertaining one to include, I feel.
