Inspired by the fact that one of my own answers is from yesterday: What's the strangest pet or other animal that anyone's ever brought into your store ( Read more... )

oddities, regulars

One snake, one lizard, and several instances of tiny dogs or cats with their heads sticking out of a tote bag.

We have a regular, though, who brings his dog in all the time. It's a Norfolk terrier called Muffin.

She looks like this, but older and slightly greyer. This dog has charmed everyone in the store. We allow pets in store because we don't serve food or drinks in our shop. The pets so far have a 100% better track record at controlling their bladder/bowels compared to human children.

Yeah, at various places I've worked I've seen service dogs, dogs in purses, dogs being carried, and dogs we had to ask to be carried, plus one tiny kitten who climbed all over my register. And the store I'm in now has two resident cats (I've also been a regular customer at one that normally had SIX).

Trying to remember now if I've ever had a snake or a bird come into a store I was working in. I know I've seen people out with snakes and birds.

What I wouldn't give for even one store cat! Can't though, because of the Cafe.

Let's see. As above, I've seen lots of miniature dogs smuggled into the store in totes, including two adorable miniature rat terriers who were regulars for a while. One guy brought his cat on a leash and tied it up outside on a really cold night, so we brought him in and paged the owner. Three boys brought their parakeet in one day in a cage, and we let him stay inside the store by the door so he wouldn't catch a chill.

We've had sparrows in the stockroom on occasion. They get in when the loading dock door is open. My cow-workers think I'm a big dork because I put a plate of bread crumbs and a bowl of water out for the last one that was trapped inside. I didn't want it to starve in the stockroom!

Then, of course, there were the cicadas this past summer. Not exactly pets, but almost big enough to put collars on.

We put poison out for the pigeons on the store roof because a) they're disgusting, b) they crap on people walking on the sidewalk outside the store, and c) they constantly hurl themselves into the air conditioner intake fan causing a messy death and a visit from the AC repair guy. The store roof looks like a pigeon holocaust. Customers will come into the store in the morning and tell us about the "poor bird" outside who looks sick. We pretend to be concerned.

We use pigeon netting on our store. It works a treat.

Our local birds have learnt to get behind the nasty spikes we've got. Across the road they balance on the wires that are meant to stop them. Not as stupid as they seem methinks.
