WRITERS WORKING IN BOOKSTORES: ORWELL & McMURTRY

Jul 27, 2008 16:36

As my parents worked in a bookstore before I was even born (a store they later owned), I have been around the book trade all my life. That's why I can't believe I've never read this amusing 1936 essay by George Orwell: Bookshop Memories. Read it. You'll enjoy it.

It reminded me of Larry McMurtry's new book, only more cynical in tone (and, in many ways, more realistic). McMurtry's book will appeal to those of us who've worked in second-hand bookstores or who have worked or dealt with book scouts. It has MAJOR appeal to booksellers in Texas (such as myself) and, to a lesser extent, California. It has fairly limited appeal to most readers, but booksellers should enjoy it. Joe Bob says "Check it out!"
