Fred smiled as she rested her head on his chest and closed her eyes. She was sure her father's barn demon would keep Rupert busy long enough that she would get her packing finished. And the idea of a ring made everything seem all the more real. They were really engaged.
She lay there for a long time, listening to his heart beating and feeling his chest rising and falling beneath her hand, until finally, she fell asleep as well.
***** Morning came rather quickly, and soon Fred and Giles were waking up, still entangled in each other's arms. The temptation to forget what they had to do and stay in bed was almost too much, but they finally managed to separate themselves - after a heavy make-out session - and get dressed.
"Why do I have this feeling I'm going to be late for my first day at the Council," Fred said with a laugh as they left the motel and headed for the farm.
As soon as they got there, Roger immediately shanghaied Giles, taking him out to the barn, while Fred went upstairs to finish packing with her mom's help. She found herself looking around the room, thinking about the fact that this was the second time she and her mother had done this. But this time, she knew things were going to be different. Her new life was truly going to be just that, and there would be no Seidel there to try to destroy what she was building with Rupert.
"We got a phone call from Giles' assistant Andrew last night," her mother said, trying to sound like she was making an innocent comment and not fishing for information.
"I know," Fred answered as she put a few more things in a box. "Turns out he's not going to need the information he was after. Rupert already asked me."
"And...?"
"I said yes."
"Oh, Fred." Her mother pulled her into a hug. "He wasn't what I ever expected when I thought about you getting married, but he's a good man. I can tell."
"He is."
They pulled out of their embrace and looked at each other for a moment, smiling. Trish touched her temple for a moment, then they went back to work, finishing packing what Fred was taking.
"I was just getting used to being home again."
Fred glanced over at her mother and nodded in understanding. "So was I. But you know that you're welcome to visit anytime. And we want you there for the wedding."
"Well, your father and I were talking about going to Hawaii this year with the money we've been saving. England would be just as good."
Giles hadn’t expected to hunt demons when he came to Texas. Nonetheless, he had brought along a few weapons in case something happened. Preparation was the first thing that was pounded into their heads at the academy. And getting the weapons there had been easy. All he had to do was show his credentials and no one thought twice about questioning why he was carrying a half-sword and battle axe.
“See?” Roger said, motioning to the broken stable doors. “Every day there’s something new to fix. And I can’t figure out why.”
Giles nodded and looked around the barn. He was glad he’d chose to wear a pair of jeans and old shirt, along with a pair of old boots. He examined the door of the stables and nodded. “See these claw marks?” he asked as Roger stepped over and looked. “You have yourself a Shootiku demon. Native to Texas and loves barns. I’m guessing this one is an adolescent from the damage it has caused. The adults are usually much tamer.”
“How do we get rid of it?” Roger asked, stepping away from the stables. “Gonna use one of those stakes?”
“Stakes? No,” said Giles as he glanced around the barn. He looked up toward the loft and handed the battle axe to the other man. “He’s up there. I’ll bang on the ceiling and when it drops down, chop it’s head off.”
“Me?” asked Roger with a wide-eyed expression. “I know nothing about killing demons!”
“It’ll be easy to kill,” Giles said. He knew he could kill the demon himself but thought it might be nice to give Roger something to talk about, especially since he’d given him his blessing to marry Fred. “Ready?”
Roger slowly nodded and Giles used piece of board to bang on the bottom of the loft. The Shootiku demon jumped down and Roger quickly cut its head off. Both men stood there and watched as the demon’s body convulsed and sprayed demon slime all over them.
“I forgot they did that,” Giles sheepishly said.
Roger didn’t seem to care though. He turned and started for the house as Giles followed. When they got inside, Roger started to yell for Trish.
“Trish! I just killed my first demon!” He yelled as Giles watched the slime drip off them and onto the kitchen floor.
Fred had just taped up the last box in her room and placed it by the door when they heard her father yelling downstairs. Looking at each other with wide eyes, she and her mother ran downstairs to the kitchen.
"What on earth are you bellowing abo--holy hell, Roger Burkle, what happened to you two?" Trish said, stopping short upon seeing the two men standing in the middle of the floor she had just cleaned the other day. "What are you getting on my floor?"
"Got the sucker that's been messing with the barn," Roger announced proudly, puffing his chest out a bit. "See, you're not the only one in the family that can take a demon out, and I didn't need no bus neither."
"Are all demons nothing but slime for guts?" she asked, rushing over and pulling some paper toweling off the roll to hand to them. She then shook her head when they tried to scrub at it and she saw that the slime was just not going to come off that way. Fred had to bite her lip to keep from giggling at the sight of the two most important men in her life dripping with goo while her mother fretted. "Okay, my big strong demon slayer, to the bathtub. Fred, you can show Rupert where the bathroom is upstairs."
Nodding, Fred walked over to Rupert and put her hand on his arm, not caring if she got slime on herself. She had seen much, much worse in her time at A.I. "Come on," she said, leading him up to the bathroom on the second floor.
She shut the door behind them and then pulled some towels out of the small closet in there before turning on the faucet in the bathtub. As she let the tub fill, she wet one of the towels and started to wipe Rupert's face off.
"Are all right? What on earth did you find in there? Whatever it was, Dad looked really excited to have killed it."
“I’ll clean up the mess later,” Giles called out as Trish and Roger left the kitchen. He didn’t think they heard him since Roger was still going on about killing the demon. He allowed Fred to lead him upstairs and to the bathroom. “It was a Shootiku demon. A young one so I thought perhaps Roger would want to kill it. I had forgotten about them shooting out slime once they were dead. And yes, I’m fine, love.”
When Fred was finished with his face, Giles pulled his shirt over his head and sat it in the basin. Then he started on his boots and jeans. Once he was completely naked, he smiled at Fred and stepped forward. He wrapped his slime-covered arms around her and softly kissed her cheek. “I think perhaps you may need a bath too.”
Giles smirked and moved away from Fred before going over to the tub. He turned off the tap and slid into it. It’d been forever since he had taken a bath and the warm water instantly relaxed his muscles. He was still a bit sore from traveling, among other things. Leaning back, he looked over at Fred with a cheeky grin.
“Are you going to wash me or join me?” he asked in a low voice, wondering if she would do either considering it was her parents’ house.
"You did that on purpose," she said with a laugh, looking down at the slime that was now clinging to her clothes. She watched him get in the tub and then raised her eyebrows when he made his invitation. "Actually...I'll be right back."
Hurrying out of the bathroom, she ran downstairs to her parents' room and opened the door, peeking in to make sure they were still in the bathroom. When she was sure the coast was clear, she made a beeline for her dad's dresser and pulled out a grey t-shirt and pair of jeans. "Dad! I'm borrowing some of your clothes for Rupert!"
Without waiting for an answer, she ran back upstairs and grabbed a clean set of clothes from her own room before returning to the bathroom. She gave him a grin as she locked the door behind her and put the pile of clothes on the hamper.
"Figured if I'm going to do this," she said, unbuttoning her cropped knit top and sliding it off, "I should probably get us some clean clothes for when we're done. Don't really think it'd be good for us to go running naked through the house trying to find some after."
She undid her jeans and kicked them off her legs. Once she had also gotten rid of her bra and panties, she walked over to the bathtub and got in with him.
"Figured it might easier to scrub you down in here with you," she said, picking up the bar of soap and leaning in closer.
Giles watched Fred leave the bathroom before he turned his attention back to the bath water. It was starting to get a bit dirty with demon slime. When Fred came back, he watched her undress. No matter how proper and English he acted, Giles was still a man and watching the woman he loved undress would always be a turn-on.
“I like the way you think,” he murmured as she leaned closer to him. Giles used the opportunity to tangle his hand in her hair and pulled her in for a deep kiss. When they parted, Giles gave her a cheeky grin. “This would be quite romantic if there wasn’t demon slime and parts floating in the water with us,” he said with a soft chuckle. “Perhaps a shower is in order afterwards? Just to make sure we get the tub clean. I wouldn’t want your mum to have to clean up our mess.”
His eyes roamed her body and he slipped the bar of soap out of her hands. “You missed a spot,” he said as he soaped up his hands and slowly ran them up her stomach. When he came to her breasts, he cupped and slid his soapy thumbs over her pert nipples. “I love you,” he said before leaning forward to kiss her.
There was suddenly a loud knock on the door and Giles quickly pulled away, looking like he’d just been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. “Fred?” came Trish’s voice. “Why don’t you hand me Rupert’s clothes so I can wash them.” They heard the door handle jiggle. “Why is the door locked?”
Fred nodded at his suggestion to use the shower when they were done. "Good idea. She's probably freaking out enough about the slime that got left all over her kitchen floor."
She was about to tell him that she hadn't even started washing him when he started washing her instead. A low groan issued from her throat when his hands found her breasts, and she closed her eyes. His kiss felt so nice, she could make herself forget that they were in the bath to clean up demon gore.
"I love you too," she breathed against his lips. "But aren't I supposed to be cleaning you up."
When her mother's voice came from the other side of the door a moment later, Fred almost jumped clear out of the bathwater. She looked at them, naked there together in the tub and then over at the door, glad that she had locked it.
"I locked the door since we had to strip Rupert's clothes off. They're pretty messy," she said, trying to keep her voice from shaking. She slowly stood from the tub and grabbed one of the towels she had pulled out, wrapping it around herself. She picked up Rupert's soiled clothes as well as her blouse and opened the door slightly to keep both herself and Rupert out of view as she handed the clothes over. "My top sort of became a casualty too, but it looks like soap and water works pretty well."
"Fred, I--."
"We'll be down once we finish in here. Don't worry, we won't leave a demon ring-around-the-tub." She shut the door again and turned around to lean against it, looking at Rupert with wide eyes.
"Make sure you bring down any towels you use when you're done," Trish finally said after a moment. "And I'm holding you to that about the tub."
"Yes, Mom." Once Trish was gone, Fred shook her head, feeling her cheeks burning what had to be bright pink. Crossing back over to the tub, she sat down on the ledge and reached out to run a hand through Rupert's hair. "Now I know why I never wanted to risk bringing a boy home before," she said with a laugh.
While Fred was speaking to her mother, Giles busied himself with cleaning the rest of his body off. It was the only thing he could do to keep from laughing. Once the grime was off, he reached back and pulled the drain. "You look bloody adorable when you blush," he said when Fred sat on the ledge of the tub. "I do suppose we should clean up the tub and get dressed."
Looking up, he noticed the shower head was detachable so he stood up and unhook the nozzle before turning on the water. He washed his body off before helping Fred up and doing the same for him. Pushing away the temptation to pick her up and shag her against the wall, he put the shower head down and got out of the tub before helping Fred out.
Giles sprayed down the tub until it was cleaned and then picked up a towel. "I'm having a hard time here, Fred," he said with a small smile. "I really want to set you on the sink counter and shag the bloody hell out of you. Perhaps you should get dressed before I do it and your mum comes back, wondering why we're moaning so much."
He stepped in front of her and picked her up before placing her on the counter. Giles softly kissed her lips and smiled. "You have to stop being so irresistible. I'm an old man and you're going to be the death of me," he murmured against her lips.
"Me irresistible? You do a pretty good job of being hard to not want to touch or kiss or make love to," she told him, locking her hands behind his neck and looking up into his eyes. "But you've really got to stop calling yourself old because you're nothing of the sort, at least not to me."
As much as she wanted to do just what he said, to open her legs and pull him closer so he could slid into her, she knew that now was not a good time as she was pretty sure that her mother would be back up after the towels soon, and she really didn't want to take a chance of getting caught again.
She pressed her lips to his for one more kiss then pushed him away even though she really didn't want to. Reaching over, she picked up the clothes she had borrowed from her father and passed them to him. "We can stop at the motel so you can change into a set of your own clothes before we go shopping, but I figured this would be better than nothing for now," she told him.
Slipping off the edge of the counter, she picked up the skirt and top she had grabbed for herself and quickly got dressed.
Giles whimpered and pouted when Fred got off the counter. He slowly dressed as he watched her dress, wishing they were back in England and in his bed. Shaking his head, he silently chuckled as he thought about how Fred was making him feel like a randy teenager again. Upon dressing, he helped Fred pick up the towels before they left the bathroom.
They went downstairs and deposited the towels in a basket. "We should get to the jewelry before we end up naked on the stairs," he said with a nod. He was going to really miss spending this much time with her once they started working at the Council.
"Are you two leaving?" asked Roger as he walked out with the battle axe Giles had let him use. "Thought we could hunt some more demons!"
Giles chuckled a little and took the axe away from Roger when he started to swing it around. "Perhaps some other time we can. I was about to take your daughter out for the rest of the day," he explained, smiling at Fred.
Roger looked a little disappointed and opened his mouth to protest when Trish walked in. "Oh, Roger! Let them spend some time together. They don't want to spend time with us in a stuffy house," she said, patting her husband's back. "Will you be back my supper?"
"Uh, I don't know," Giles said, glancing toward Fred. "I don't know how long we'll be gone."
She lay there for a long time, listening to his heart beating and feeling his chest rising and falling beneath her hand, until finally, she fell asleep as well.
