Thus far I'm plugging along with Adam Bede by George Eliot. It's a little slow, but it's Eliot and I've read and loved several Victorian writers so I can take it. :-)

If you don't find one, I might be able to send you a penguin book copy. I have the complete novels of Jane Austen and I am sure I have Emma lying around as paperback as well... does depend where you are and how much postage would be... I am in Austria.

I read a lot of Austen last year, all from Project Gutenberg (or Feedbooks, which is the same text with slightly improved packaging), on either my iPod Touch or my iPhone. I know it isn't to everyone's taste, but it's quick and free.

Sadly I am going to be the " OMG this book please shoot me!" post. I have Les Chants de Maldoror at the moment and I really gave it my all but it is just not for me. Please can I be re-assigned?

Well, I must admit that doesn't look like a book that would be my first choice either, but I've put it back on the "available" list (and if I get it the next time I run the script for myself, I will give it my best shot).

So, you have a new book.

I had to read Maldoror for Uni and my first reaction was WTF! Poetry can be difficult to get into, especially in a translation, and given Lautrémont's "let's shock and disgust them" attitude... I remember vivdly the part where there is copulation with sea monsters...

So it wasn't the Japanese who invented tentacle-rape, it was the French!

I haven't actually started my book yet (and I am going to try it; this isn't a 'please reassign me' post), but the summary I found on Wikipedia is making me nervous. Attempted incestuous rape and domestic abuse, oh my! D: Not to mention a childbirth scene, which u...is probably going to get skipped over, especially since it's supposedly very realistic. Why hello there, pregnancy/childbirth phobia!
