Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

alas i have seen the movie. like spiderman 3 i had big expectations for this one as well. i'm happy to say that it didn't leave me annoyed like spidy3 did, but there was stuff that did get me scratching my head. there was a review in the Toronto Star about the third installment, and the review was pretty bad: 2 stars out of 4, and the reviewer said that the movie was very confussing. i didn't believe it, cause that's what they said about the first two, and those ended up pretty damn awesome. so that's why i kinda hate to say... the reviewer was partially right.

like spidy, there's lots about the movie that i loved, and parts that were, confussing. there was a lot of storylines in the movie that i didn't feel was closed well enough, or wasn't even closed at all. the biggest one being the Brethren Court (the court consisting of the nine pirate lords). now it was really cool, but their purpose was kinda sketchy. i was confussed for a good part of the movie as to what exactly they were trying to accomplish by holding a meeting and reuniting everyone. but then, when the purpose was made clear, and it was time to "execute" it, it kinda wasn't. i figured that the court would have more to do in the movie that just have a role in that one meeting. cause in the end, it ended up being Barbossa, Elizabethe, Will and the crew of the Black Pearl who saw the "plan" to the end.

and wait the purpose of the Brethren Court was to release the sea goddess Calypso (or Kalypso) from her human form. but that in and of itself was confussing. Calypso's story tied in with Davy Jones, as she was the one he fell in love with... and she with him (apparently). i was never clear on which side Calypso was in. in her human form, she appeared to be with Will and Jack, but nearing her releasement, i wasn't so sure anymore. oh wait.. but when she was released, i was expecting so huge, climactic event wherein she would aid the Brethren Court. but no such luck, instead she split into billions of crabs and fell into the sea. then she caused a hell of a sea storm and that was the last of her =S

i think one of the main things that ticked me off in the movie was Elizabeth. i mean, she was such a main role in everything this movie, and it had me wondering "when did this happen? how did this happen? WHY?!?!" not that i don't enjoy a strong female presence in movies (or any other form of media) but her sudden voyeur to the front was so RANDOM! and the most annoying part... WHY WAS SHE KISSING SO MANY GUYS OTHER THAN WILL?!?! wasn't she supposed to love the guy. i mean, the second movie left you with that treacherous kiss between her and Jack, and you sort of get a feeling that she may have felt more for him. even through the first half hour of the movie i was still thinking that just because her and Will were on such strained terms (apparently they weren't to talk until Jack was saved). then as the movie progressed their relationship didn't get that much better, and then she ends up kissing that dude she was engaged to originally (James Norrington). STOP KISSING PEOPLE OTHER THAN WILL FOR CHRIST'S SAKE! really, i didn't know who that woman wanted. and then, when her and Will decided to stop dicking around and get married, as fate would have it, they can't be together like a normal married couple, because Will is forced to become the new captain of the Flying Dutchmen. Will must not carry on Davy Jones' job in leading the souls of the dead to the other place for ten years, then he may step foot on land for a day to be with his darling wife. i hated that crueal twist.

but despite all that i've said, the movie was super entertaining and kick ass. out of all three movies, this one had to be the funniest one. although usually was the centre of everything humourous, everyone had their fair share at making the audience laughing out loud. there was the scene in the beginning of the movie, where the small dude from the crew of the Black Pearl was packing one mighty big gun, and he shot and he flew. then there was the monkey's many mischevious moments, one being the moment he lit a firework during the fightscene right into a hut packing even more fireworks, serving as a perfect distraction for a get away. then there was the two baboons that joined Jack's crew in the second movie (the tall thin dude with one eye-ball and the other shorter and slighter rounder dude). upon seeing dead bodies floating in the sea, they ponder "wonder what happens when you drop a canon on'em?" and then the proceed to get canons to find the answer.

really though, Jack Sparrow was a big source of comedy in the movie. my favourite scene had to be the one near the beginning when he was still in Davy Jones' Locker. he was onboard the Black Pearl and totally loosing it. he was maning the big ol ship with a crew consisting of himself. he was talking to himself, ordering himself around, killing himself. =S it was just funny. then when he gets off the boat and proceeds to try and pull the massive boat, he thinks rocks are following it (the rocks were crabs in hiding). he falls down after failing to pull the big ship, and wakes to sea it moving across the ground. and his facial expression as he watches his ship moving is so funny.

wait.. i forget there was another amusing scene with Barbossa and Jack on board the Black Pearl where Jack was mimicking Barbossa's every command because they couldn't decide who was the captain of the ship, and the random short and slighty round guy from the duo come in between their bickering and command that they both do what he says. lol, funny guy. and the competition with the telecscopes, very VERY hilarious.

apart from the comedy, this movie was action packed, from beginning to end. the beginning starts of with action in Singapore, and leads up to the big climactic battle at sea. lots of awesome sword fighting and a few moments of gunslinging. that battle at the end, where the Flying Dutchman and the Black Pearl were fighting in the big Whirlpool in the middle of the sea was truelly amazing. there's really nothing else i can say about it except that.

so yes, he movie, very good... but i think people will get annoyed at least a couple of times. and if you start getting confussed, don't worry... it will sort of get cleared up near the end, and if you still can't get it, you can do what me and my friends did at the end of the movie; sit their and give in your piece of the puzzle until everything's cleared up.

edit: my sister is reading up on the movie, and found out something very relevent to the ending of the movie. and unfortunately for us, we left BEFORE the ending credits finished rolling, cause there was an extra scene (like the other 2 movies) at the very end. so word of advice stay till the very end. i'm seeing the movie again anyway, so i will see it then. but i'm still cheesed that i missed it!
