the great playlist...

Jan 28, 2009 16:52

**Sorry I couldn't put an LJ-cut! It was getting spazzy, so I gave up. :\ Sorry about that!

If you know me, you know I love books.

If you know me well, you know how much I love making playlists for everything and anything. ♥

I made this playlist for "The Great Gatsby" when I was working on my essay... I kinda did it hastily (2 minutes! Maybe a record for me. I think.), but I think it turned out pretty well. And, since: 1) I don't have school today and 2) I am not going anywhere today and 3) I need to keep my mind off of things...

Plus, I know a lot of you guys have been looking for new songs. xD But seriously: if you want new music, let it find you, let it come to you. Believe me, it's no fun when you feel like you're obligated or have to or want to find songs... If songs come, they come. If they don't... Oh well. It's so much more amazing when you happen to stumble upon it, like a hidden treasure.

Anyways-- I am obsessed with this playlist: I can explain every single song and it's relation to this Modernist work of art. Please listen to the playlist if you can! :) Let me know what you think the top 3 songs are that relate to the novel.

1. "Thinking of You" - Katy Perry

Daisy's POV, towards Gatsby. About her relationship with Tom and how she feels about Gatsby. (I think the music video is sorta relevant too! Check it out.)

"Cause when I'm with him
I am thinking of you
...
Oh I wish that I
Was looking into your eyes.
...
Oh won't you walk through
And bust in the door
And take me away
Oh no more mistakes
Cause in your eyes I'd like to stay..."

2. "Do You Know What I'm Seeing?" - Panic At the Disco

Song relevance:
1) The title reminds me of Dr. T.J. Eckleberg's eyes--like how he is looking down upon this Modernist world, this pessimistic and hopeless world.
2) I feel like if there was another movie trailer, going through the Valley Of Ashes, this song would make a great intro: listen to the first 45 seconds/first few lyrics--perfection.
3) It's just so pessmistic, and that gave it a Modernist mood... If this could be in anyone's POV, I'd say either Gatsby, or maybe even George Wilson. (But the last few lyrics here remind me of Gatsby/Daisy).

"Clouds are marching along, singing a song, just like they do.
If the clouds were singing a song, I'd sing along, wouldn't you too?
If you just knew what they could do.
Oh, if you just knew, what would they do?
...
I know it's sad that I never gave a damn about the weather,
And it never gave a damn about me.
..
...
I know it's mad, but if the world were ending
Would you kiss me or just leave me?
Just leave me?"

3. "Save Us" - Cartel

THIS SONG IS SO AMAZING, I am completely in love with it. Again, this had a Modernist tone to it because it had this hopelessness and loss of faith in it...

"Simple words we never knew,
The power behind what they put us through,
Now it's all begun what it takes to make it real.
We're standing on the edge of this,
When our soul is gone what will we miss?
We lost what it takes to really, make it feel.

But the better day's behind us now,
We all need someone to tell us how
To save the state of where we are,
It keeps demanding more and more and more.

And who will save us?
This can't go on, without the meaning in the rhyming.
Can you save? Can you save us?
Well I can't go on, out of rhythm with our time."

4. "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead" - Stars

POV: Gatsby/Daisy. Plus, the intro sounded pretty Modernist: "When there's nothing left to burn, you have to set yourself on fire."

"God that was strange to see you again
Introduced by a friend of a friend
Smiled and said 'yes I think we've met before'
In that instant it started to pour
...
It's nothing but time and a face that you lose
I chose to feel it and you couldn't chose
I'll write you a postcard
I'll send you the news
From a house down the road from real love...

Live through this, and you won't look back...
Live through this, and you won't look back...
...

You were what I wanted
I gave what I gave
I'm not sorry I met you
I'm not sorry it's over
I'm not sorry there's nothing to say..."

5. "Cute Without the E" - Taking Back Sunday

This was a hard one, but I feel like this is Tom Buchanan's POV, towards Daisy. However, it could be a Myrtle/Tom thing with a Wilson POV. But the voice sounds so angry and bitter that it seems very Tom.

"Your lipstick, his collar...
Don't bother angel
I know exactly what goes on
...

When everything you'll get is
Everything that you've wanted, princess
(Well which would you prefer)
...

Hoping for the best just hoping nothing happens
A thousand clever lines unread on clever napkins
I wil never ask if you don't ever tell me
I know you well enough to know you never loved me..."

6. "Mr. Brightside" - The Killers

Ironic title, and I feel like this is the kind of song that reminds me of their parties (especially the music video as well).

"While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his-chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, letting me go
...
And I just can't look its killing me
And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'Cause I'm Mr Brightside..."

7. "Northern Downpour" - Panic At the Disco

Sort of a Modernist tone, not really, but I think the first few lyrics were ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.

"If all our life is but a dream
Fantastic posing greed, then we should feed our jewelry to the sea
...
You are at the top of my lungs
Drawn to the ones who never yawn..."

~~Okay, the rest I'll explain later, for now I'm just going to put the lyrics! Unless it requires explaination, but some of them are hard to explain; you have to listen to them to understand. (Also, I'm getting lazy. xD Plus, it's all mostly repetitive...)~~

8. "Indiana" - Meg and Dia

Daisy's POV (towards Tom).

"I can do whatever I want like you
I can do whatever I want like you
I can do whatever I want like you
Like You

She began to die
Indiana that's not right
Indiana that's not right
She began to fight
Indiana make it mine
Indiana make it mine
...
So pale and white
....
Colonel sir, I feel lonely tonight
...
Such honest eyes
No time to run and ride
Colonel sir I feel lonely tonight
She's strong but her mind is losing light
...
I know, I know
She's alone
Alone..."

9. "Matter of Time" - Cartel

Gatsby's POV.

"Cause where you are is where you'll be
always wanting everything.
It's all the same that you can't ignore
Cause all you want is just to be more.

It's creeping up again.
(It's all been considered, it's a game and you're not the winner)
It's a haunting memory...
...
Cause what you want's not what you're getting.
It's just a matter of time,
It's just a matter of time,
'til you know you'll be somebody tonight."

10. "Such Great Heights" - The Postal Service

"...And I have to speculate that God himself
Did make us into corresponding shapes like
Puzzle pieces from the clay
And true, it may seem like a stretch, but
Its thoughts like this that catch my troubled
Head when you're away when I am missing you to death
...

They will see us waving from such great
Heights, 'come down now,' they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away,
'come down now,' but we'll stay..."

11. "Mad As Rabbits" - Panic At the Disco

"Come save me from walking off a windowsill or I'll sleep in the rain.
Don't you remember when I was a bird and you were a map?
Now he drags down miles in America briefcase in hand.
The stove is creeping up his spine again, can't get enough trash.

He took the days for pageant
Became as mad as rabbits
With bushels of bad habits
Who could ask for anymore?
who could have more?
...

But there ain't no sunshine in his song
We must reinvent love..."

12. "For A Pessimist, I'm Pretty Optimistic"

Should it be titled, "For a Modernist, I'm pretty Optimistic"? xD
Daisy's POV.

"Just talk yourself up
And tear yourself down
You've hit your one wall
Now find a way around
Well what's the problem?
You've got a lot of nerve

So what did you think I would say?
No you can't run away, no you can't run away
So what did you think I would say?
No you can't run away, no you can't run away
You wouldn't

I never wanted to say this
You never wanted to stay
I put my faith in you, so much faith
And then you just threw it away
You threw it away

I'm not so naive
My sorry eyes can see
The way you fight shy
Of almost everything
Well, if you give up
You'll get what you deserve..."

13. "Burn This City" - Cartel

Sounds like what led to the Valley of Ashes... Ha. Reckless youth and shocking behavior.
Yes, very Modernist.
(I think the lyric I bolded -"Play it again (our games of love and lust)"- is RIGHT ON. VERY GATSBY, in terms of the relationships and forms of "love" present in the novel. "Games" is the correct term, indeed.)

"Stay up all night and sleep all day,
We were smart kids with too much to say.
And so, so sure that they were missing out,
They're the ones who were missing out, and
We were elemental, talked down to bare essentials,
Who knew we'd get so far?

Cause our days were numbered by nights on too many rooftops.
They said we'd burn so bright.
We'd burn this city and go.

Play it again,(our Games of Love and Lust)
There's no such thing (no there's never too much).
And we were so, so sure, No we never had a doubt.
We were counting down days to getting out.

We were elemental, talked down to bare essentials.
Who knew we'd get so far?(Who knew we'd get so far?)

Cause our days were numbered by nights on too many rooftops.
They said we're wasting our lives,
Oh at least we know, that if we die - we lived with passion.
They said we'd burn so bright.
We'd burn this city and go.
...
Pack our bags and lets get away - they're catching on to us..."

14. "Float On" - Modest Mouse

Of course, I left "Float On" for last. I thought of Gatsby's death immediately, and how "floating" played a key role in the story. The song isn't entirely relevant, but I thought it was a nice ending to a such a pessmisitc playlist with Modernist themes.
A little optimisim...

This one's for you, Gatsby. ♥

"And we'll all float on.
Alright already, we'll all float on.
Alright, don't worry even if things end up a bit too heavy.
We'll all float on..."
