What an awesome episode of LOST last night. I think we finally got an answer as to who is good and who is evil. The rest is behind the cut.
Wow! I was looking forward to the Richard episode, but this one really blew me away. We got Richard's story, intertwined with info about Jacob and Smokey as well. Awesome storytelling, guys!
First up, let's discuss how Richard got to the island. Once again, we have someone who has murdered someone, albeit accidental. Once again, someone is looking for redemption and finds himself drawn to the island. Nice priest, by the way, offering no absolution at all. Anyway, it was confirmed that Richard arrived on the island via the Black Rock in 1867. I thought it was interesting that the huge statue was still standing up until that point.
Next, we have good ole Smokey. Very cunning, that one. He kills everyone else, including the captain who is about to off Richard. This later serves to ingratiate Richard to him, for a short time. He was attempting to gain his trust by doing that. He spared him and tried to make him believe that he tried to save his wife as well.
Now, it was interesting because I started to fall for Smokey's ploy. His whole Dogen routine of "stab the guy with this knife in the chest, but don't let him speak or it's over" thing made me think that we were dealing with the good guy. But then he lost me when he started promising that he could get Isabella back for him. This was too close to all the promises that Flocke is making, i.e. Nadia, getting them off the island. Too much double speak going on with him. I'm now fully, 100% on the Smokey is evil bandwagon. I'll admit it if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's much doubt now.
Moving on to Jacob. He just seems inherently more honest. He's upfront about bringing the ship there. I loved his analogy about keeping evil in its place, using the wine bottle as an example. It seems that Smokey is pure evil and he must be contained on that island. I have a theory about this now, but I'll continue it in a second. We're still talking about Jacob and Richard here. Jacob seems to be all about second chances, stating that the past doesn't matter on the island. He brings people there (re: Kate, Sawyer, Charlie, Sayid, etc.) to give them a chance to make the right choices. Some do, most don't. It's the struggle between good and evil again. I could write a whole other post about this. At any rate, he offers Richard another chance, but can't give him his wife back and can't save him from hell. He's upfront about these things, not making promises he can't keep. Hear that, Smokey? Richard chooses to live forever, forgoing hell as an option and choosing eternal penance for his sins. Notice how Jacob touches his as he says, "That I can do."
Here's where I got really worried. Richard decides that he's been lied to by Jacob all these years, that he truly is in hell. He thinks that he should now take Smokey up on his offer. I was actually yelling at the tv, "No, Richard! Don't do it!" But then Hurley saves the day. I had forgotten that Hurley was talking to someone in Spanish earlier in the episode. Turns out it was Isabella. What a touching scene that was. With Hurley's help, she set her husband straight and put him back on the path of serving Jacob. No way is he going to trust Smokey now that his wife has proven him otherwise.
Now about Smokey, it seems the same way you kill Smokey is the same way you kill Jacob: knife to the chest, don't let him speak first. This is how Ben killed Jacob, correct? I have to go back and look at the season finale because I don't recall if Jacob spoke first. I don't think he did. Anyway, if you kill Jacob, he needs someone to replace him, hence the six candidates. I think Smokey needs a replacement as well. So, not only is Jacob looking for someone to replace him, but Smokey is as well. I think this is where Sayid comes in. See, it's all about balance. You can't have dark without light, good without evil. Right now, the island is in imbalance without Jacob. He keeps Smokey in check. The reverse is true as well. If Smokey is killed or leaves, someones must take his place to counter Jacob. Interesting, huh?
Incidentally, what exactly happens if evil is unleashed on the world? I don't think I want to know.
I now think I know what the last scene of the show will look like. The new Jacob and the new Smokey will be sitting on the beach, waiting for the next batch of survivors to arrive. Smokey will either be Flocke or Sayid and my money is on Hurley to be Jacob, although I wouldn't be surprised to see Jack in the role either.
Discuss.
