Have any of you read these?

So my mother gave me two (very different) books to read yesterday, telling me that they were the best of thier genre she'd read in ages. I've tried chapter one of both and felt decidedly *head**wall*/*yawn* about them.

So my question has anyone read The Skull by Shaun Hutson (best horror novel evah apparently) or Immortal by Gillian Shields (best YA apparently)?

And if so should I bother trying chapter 2 etc or bail now and read something else?

The reason I ask is that my mother's  book recs seem to be equally divided between 'so glad I read it' and 'well that sucked'
