1. What did you do in 2014 that you’d never done before?
Lived on my own for more than three months (or, well, with a roommate but same deal). Wrote every single day, at least a hundred words a day-- I'm very proud of that. Not much else though.
2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I kept one, two sort of, and two not at all, but I will definitely make more for next year, and work on making more monthly goals. They're good things to have.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Several people, actually. One cousin had a baby in January, another had a baby in September, and a friend of mine had a baby like a week ago. They are all very adorable and sweet babbies.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Not this year, and hopefully it will remain that way. However, my brother's girlfriend's stepfather died, and I wish him all the peace in the world.
5. What countries did you visit?
None. I stayed in the US this year. I did go to San Francisco and Rhode Island, though, and I had never been to Rhode Island before. I also went to Michigan, Iowa, Louisana, and Arizona, none of which I had been to before.
6. What would you like to have in 2015 that you lacked in 2014?
A stable proper library job as a reference librarian back home in my own library. Also, my sanity back thank you very much.
7. What date from 2014 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
May 19th, 2014, my anniversary. :D
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I somehow conned shipwreck_light into dating me. Also I successfully completed a cross-country meet-ALL-the-people road trip without dying or getting pulled over more than once.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Same as last year: I still have a problem with being a bitch to myself and I still haven't worked on anything intended for publication. Someday I'll manage both.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I have the enormous ridiculous cold of doom right now, and of course I've been struggling with serious depression on and off since May. It's gotten so bad I had to quit my job (although of course there were other serious factors in there).
11. What was the best thing you bought?
THE DRESS I DESPERATELY WANTED LAST YEAR. Also, gas to get me to see my friends and my girlfriend. <3
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
The Pope continues awesome. My girlfriend is indescribably amazing. My friends remain wonderful and wise, especially one particular friend who has been staying up with me and getting up early for me and willing to listen to me whine and just generally going above and beyond the call of duty-- you know who you are, darling. My parents dropped everything twice to come see me and make sure I would be okay. The Ferguson protestors and their colleagues in multiple other countries and areas. Oddly, even Glenn Beck had one shining moment of awesome.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Management at my job. I just. No. Guys. You sent me home. You sent me home. You do not get to write me up for not being at work that day because you sent me home.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Rent, gas, and books. Worth it.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
DATING SHIPWRECK_LIGHT. Christmas with my father and stepfamily. Thanksgiving with my mother and without her fiance. Seeing so many lovely friends for the first time in person.
16. What song will always remind you of 2014?
Basically Taylor Swift's 1989 CD. I'm not sorry at all.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Sadder again. Fuck my brain.
ii. thinner or fatter? Thinner again, goddamnit.
iii. richer or poorer? Actually richer. But not by much.
18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
I wish I had spent more time with my friends in VA and my friends along the way to California while I still could. I feel like I didn't get enough time with you guys. I plan to rectify this grievous fault as soon as I am able. Also writing things I intended for publication.
19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Procrastinating. Being a bitch to myself. Writing things I didn't intend to be published. Working at a job that was very bad for me much longer than I should have.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent it with my father and my stepfamily in SF, celebrating a huge traditional Danish Christmas. It was lots of fun, plus I got to go see the San Francisco Public Library and go to Borderlands again.
21. How will you be spending New Year’s?
At home, with the worst cold known to man, lying on the couch watching Ken Burns documentaries and writing up this meme.
22. Did you fall in love in 2014?
Yep! Full-blown crush which developed with significant encouragement into love for my Best Beloved, who, as I mentioned, is perfect.
23. How many one-night stands?
None. Nnnnnnot my thing, guys.
24. What was were your favorite TV program(s)?
SPARTACUS, West Wing, Bob's Burgers, Archer, American Dad, Leverage.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Not really. I've been disappointed in people, but I'm trying not to hate- I think it's bad for me.
26. What was the best book you read?
Just off the top of my head: Death by Silver and Death in the Dionysius Club by Melissa Scott and Amy Griswold, The Song of Achilles by Madeleine Miller, Slammerkin by Emma Donoghue, Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh, The Empathy Exams by Leslie Jamison. And that's just off the top of my head. Really there were endless ones.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
More like a rediscovery, but I rediscovered how much I adore Taylor Swift, from her early bouncy country phase to her more recently "holy shit when did you get so awesome" phase.
28. What did you want and get?
Booooks all the books and some beautiful jewelry from shipwreck_light and shipwreck_light herself, and some gorgeous art and some people to scream at about Death By Silver etc and The Song of Achilles and yes. Boooooooks.
29. What did you want and not get?
My sanity back, goddamnit. I'm working on it.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Pacific Rim. This with having seen it at long last. I cannot with how awesome it is. Also, Annie-- have you SEEN it have you SEEN Quvanzhene Wallis have you SEEN THIS GUYS.
31. What did you do on your birthday?
Lay around the house. Dressed up because I wanted to feel cute. Talked to my girlfriend for a long time, received a teacup full of flowers, opened some presents, hung around the house some more, slept. A good birthday.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Less depression and anxiety. I can't improve on this answer.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?
"Fuck you I'm sick." alternating with "Fuck you I'm cute."
34. What kept you sane?
Unfortunately, nothing. I'm getting better though.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Natalie Dormer. I'm really, really, really certain that I'm not alone in this.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Ferguson and the Black Lives Matter movement, followed closely by the recent suicide of Leelah Alcorn, may she rest in peace.
37. Who did you miss?
My family and my best beloved. :(
38. Who was the best new person you met?
ALL OF YOU LOVELY PEOPLE. Everyone I met on the Road Trip Of Epic. Even though we were all friends before, there's just something about meeting you in person.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2014:
Sometimes you have to give up. It's okay. It's okay to give up and concentrate on yourself.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off
Heart-breakers gonna break, break, break, break, break
And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off
-Taylor Swift, Shake It Off
