How many books do you have which are signed by an author or illustrator?
I have about 20 signed books, but some of them are comics, so the exact number depends on how you count: "Fragile Things" by Neil Gaiman, "The Alphabet and The Goddess" by Leonard Shlain, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" by JK Rowling, "Castle Waiting" by Linda Medley, "A Little Book of Monsters" by Lynn Hunter, "The Wheel of Change Tarot" by Alexandra Genetti, "The Last Unicorn" by Peter S Beagle, "I See it All" by Deth P Sun, "Song of the Lioness Quartet" by Tamora Pierce, "Lackadaisy" by Tracy J Butler, "Kabuki: Skin Deep" by David Mack, and four single chapter comics by David Mack, "Polly and the Pirates" by Ted Naifeh and "Sex, Time and Power" by Leonard Shlain.

Which was the first one you got?
The first signed book I ever got was "The Wheel of Change Tarot" by Alexandra Genetti. It was given to me by the author on my 9th birthday. Alexandra is a very talented artist who painted and published the Wheel of Change Tarot deck along with the book.

Which was the most recent?
The most recent was the Alanna series by Tamora Pierce. I started reading these books in fifth grade, and have re-read them innumerable times since then. I thought I had missed my last chance to get them signed though, because I somehow missed the last time Tamora Pierce visited my hometown. I NEVER thought she’d be back! I ended up getting her signature in my first Alanna book and her thumbprint and stamp in the other three books in the series.

Have you ever bought a book already signed by an author?
Yes, I found a copy of "Castle Waiting" by Linda Medley which was not only signed, but also personalized with a small original drawing and the message "Happy Reading!" Of course I bought it right away.

Have you ever forged an author’s signature in a book?
No. But I knew a kid in elementary who loved the Redwall books by Brian Jacques so much that his mom forged the author’s signature into all of them for him.

Which of your signed books has the best story?
In 1999 I got my first and third Harry Potter Books signed by JK Rowling, who was doing a promotion tour for the third book. She spoke in a high school gym near where I live. Yes, that’s right- a high school gym. It probably didn't hold more than 1500 people.

If you could pick one book you own by a living author to get signed, which would you pick?
Now that I’ve met Tamora Pierce, the next author I really want to met is Lois McMaster Bujold. I own nearly all of her books now, and I love every one of them. I don't know which one I would choose to get signed- probably either "Cordelia's Honor" or "Warrior Apprentice".

If you could pick one book you own by a deceased author to get signed, which would you pick?
Lord of the Rings, of course. I love reading biographies of other authors who knew Tolkien and had him as a college professor. They make me insanely jealous, but still. (Sorry William Shakespeare- you are a close second!)

Do you have a signed book which you haven’t read yet?
Yes, I shamefully admit. My mom got me two books by Leonard Shlain and had him sign them to me and everything. They are non-fiction, and a little dense. One of them I've read about half of, and I actually reference it in both my high school thesis and my undergraduate thesis papers. But I haven't even cracked open the cover of the other one!

Have you ever gone to an author signing and not gotten your book signed?
Yeah, and I am still kicking myself about it! I got to see Eoin Colfer speak, but forgot to bring any of my Artemis Fowl books, and then just decided not to buy a new one. I think I bought some manga instead. *Shakes fist at younger self* He's Irish, and pretty popular now- I doubt he will be coming back.
