The other day I picked up one of the His Dark Materials books for the first time in three years. I haven't been able to touch them since handing in my thesis in 2002. I only read a few chapters but got sucked in again by the beautiful writing and gripping, complex, ambitious plot.

If I did that book meme again, I would once again have His Dark Materials on the list of favourite and frequently read books.

Reading books like His Dark Materials, American Gods and Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrell makes me realise again just how conventional a lot of fantasy writers are, even favourites like Robin Hobb and Juliet Marillier.
