Taipei, a guide for out-door lovers.

Taipei is an awesome for day-trips, and not having your own transport really doesn't hinder things at all.

Here is a list of some awesome stuff you can do.

Pinglin: Beautiful crystal clear rivers, tea plantations etc, lots of wildlife
Just a bus ride from xindian MRT You can pick the slow beautiful bus, or the fast motorway bus.

Taipei reservoir area: Lots of countryside to explore, and very few other tourists. Just get off the slow bus to Pinglin earlier, and walk down.

Yangmingshan: There's the actual mountain, which is worth an explore, take 小8 bus then there is a park nearby which is also nice if a little tamer.

MRT hopping - there's a nice hike going from the brown line dachi to the red line jiantan.  A little more ambitious is the bottom of the green line to the bottom of the yellow line.  I've hiked about 90% of it going one way and then the other, but never atually connected them up as of yet.

There's a really nice temple south of Zhonghe you can hike up to and then hike around the area. Good if you're fit and active.

Wulai: Another place you can get to taking a bus from Xindian MRT. Loads of fun options, and if you get off the beaten track where tourists swarm, some really beautiful hiking trails.

Go on the gondola and see Maokong village: This is more touristy and busy of course, but a nice relaxing day out none the less. You can get off two stops early and walk down, or one stop early and visit the zoo.

I'm sure there is more, but that'll do for now.
