I just finished Connie Willis’s Blackout and am on to All Clear. I want to like it more than I do - I remember fondly this universe, the universe of time-traveling historians and Doomsday Book and Fire Watch. But I feel like too much of the suspense is created merely by the little exigencies of time travel (did I get to the right place? In the right time? Where am I anyway? Act natural!), rather than actual plot twists, which is kinda like reading a book about whether you’re going to catch the bus you’re running late for: stressful, and not particularly interesting. The last third of Blackout was better, so hopefully All Clear will continue the trend.
I’ll be traveling on Thursday, so I’ll take this opportunity to wish you a happy Solstice and a belated or premature happy winter-holiday-of-your-choice. I’m working on a solstice-themed fic that I’d love to get finished and posted by then, but I make no promises.
