Moving pictures

With the last few episodes, but particularly with the season finale, Justified drew me in. I could say that it’s not the kind of thing I usually watch, which is mostly true. But when something comes together as well as Justified did, I don’t really care what it’s about - it could be about alien killer clowns or ice road trucking. I think everything works together perfectly - the acting, the writing, the cinematography, the set design, the music - to evoke the kind of mood they want to create. Totally Southern Gothic meets Western, with a patina of 2000s cynical desperation. I look forward to seeing season 2.

A-Team - fun, but I have to agree with the review that called it Sex & the City for dudes. Or maybe adolescent boys, because it was very broad. They lost me on the nostalgia angle, honestly, but on its own merits it’s at least as good as any other explody-movie I’ve seen recently. The plot was clear and not overly simplified, and all the actors did fine jobs. I bought the recasting of Hannibal and Face but had a hard time with Barracus and Murdoch. The former I expected, because who can be Mr. T except Mr. T?

There aren’t many movies this summer that I’m looking forward to - anyone else have something they're wanting to see?

Logo's been doing a 'favorite 30 episodes of Buffy' thing which I got sucked into. I was never a rabid Buffy fan but watching it now makes me really enjoy the writing. There are a few episodes that miss the mark, but the vast majority are excellent, which is quite an accomplishment. The musical episode, of course, got voted #1 favorite, no big surprise. I do think it's a great episode but it doesn't really stand alone; it had more impact when taken in the context of the season it was in.
