canon rebel xt

When I came home from work yesterday, I noticed that somebody had draped our welcome mat over a small box. Even stranger was that the box was addressed to me from A.C.C. -- what in the world is that? I certainly was not expecting any packages. The box was somewhat heavy, and the things rattling around inside sounded like wires and electronic gadgets.

It is a post-9/11 world, so my first thought was that someone had mailed me a bomb. Dumb, I know, but that's what I thought. I carried it to the porch to open it carefully, the flaps always facing away from me.

Thankfully, it wasn't a bomb.

It was my dream camera, the Canon EOS 350D (also called the Rebel XT)! I've been following the development of this camera since the early 2000s, and have been anxiously waiting for the opportunity to buy it for many years. Although it's digital, it has all the feel of a film camera (no LCD viewfinder, you have to use the eyepiece!) and it requires a bit of skill to wrangle. Just what I want. Yesterday's surprise? It's a gift from my brother. He had planned to surprise me with it, but waiting in the airport last month, I was about to purchase musicismath's 300D when my brother stopped me and said, "You can't do that! I'm going to give you that camera!"

So, in a sense, I knew it was coming. But I didn't know that it was going to show up on my doorstep yesterday! Very exciting, very cool, and very fun to practice with. I own the film version of this camera (and am using the lenses from that one), so the adjustment process is going quickly -- I already know the controls and such. The big learning curve for me is going to be the post-production, if I even get into that. Being a little old-fashioned about photography, I consider it a worthwhile challenge to try to capture the right light and the right colors in the original shot.

Here are some shots that I took today while testing out the different functions. If you follow gerr-bon-365, you've seen this first picture already:

Anyway, thank you, Titus! I know there's no way I could repay you for this or that I could earn it from you, so I accept the gift with gladness and much appreciation. It's so exciting for me to have my hands on a "real" camera again. Thank you!
