Our home network has grown a branch - we now have a working network cable from the switch in the computer room to the socket in the lounge, so portable internet in the warm room with cables under the floor rather than down the hallway - woohoo! I can now plug my laptop into the socket from the dinner table.
The next step is to get some device (apparently such a thing exists) to plug into the network socket and transmit to my laptop, so that it can be connected from the couch or beanbag as well as the dinner table. The idea is to have a short-range (10m) wireless connection that can be activated when required to connect to a single wireless-enabled computer but left off for the majority of the time.
The tricky part is finding out what sort of device actually performs this function. A wireless router seems like overkill (plus quite expensive) to get a few extra metres of mobility.
