Oh, Tennessee. There's a reason you have a reputation as a backward, sibling-lovin' redneck backwater. I lived there for several years, and not everybody is like that, but the ones who are are just so damn loud.

I have friends there, too, and I imagine they are ashamed.

I didn't realize how bad it still is until recently.

This! I live in Nashville and between this sort of thing and protests about a mosque going up in Murfreesboro and the Islamic community center that was vandalized here in town... yes, rational thought and acceptance definitely has its work cut out for it. :/

If I lived there, I think I'd feel like I was drowning.

Well, it's truly not as bad as that. Nashville is a little island of progression in a sea of Glen Beck fans. We always seem to elect Democratic mayors, for example. But yes, we often feel the accusatory stares of the outside world which might not realize this since all of the good that is done here goes unreported, while negative stories like this soar into the news stream of a much wider audience. For example, there is an organization which developed locally to combat the mosque protesters. But you don't hear about them amidst the din of the crazies that started protesting its construction in the first place. It's not as good of a story. :/

True that. It's like you hear about Westboro Baptist and their awful protests, but you don't hear about the groups that regularly counter protest them.
