It's not the same situation, but it reminds me how at work, they used to have parties for the students and require us teachers to be there. But because it was outside of work... we had to pay the same 5,000 yen cover charge as the students! I definitely kicked up a huge fuss about that. I was perfectly happy not to come, but since I HAD to, I most definitely wasn't going to be PAYING for it! If you require my presence at a work event, then I get PAID FOR WORK.
...they actually did apologize and pay for me and the other teachers. The Japanese teachers, too, because I insisted that no, it's not just the foreign teachers for whom it isn't fair, but for ALL the teachers. It really pisses me off when, if I complain about the work situation, they think they can shut me up by just fixing mine. The Japanese teachers can deal with it because they're Japanese. And they won't stand up for themselves. So I have to be the one to say hey, they don't deserve to be treated like shit, either.
*sigh*
The answer to getting way too much work should not be to work harder and longer. The answer should be to HIRE MORE EMPLOYEES. But most Japanese companies won't do that, because they know they can get their current employees to work 5 hours of unpaid overtime. Well, fuck that.
