in sunny LA with the octogenarian crowd

I am not the greatest with old people. I don't have a lot of patience.

I didn't sleep at all on the flight this time, so I spent the day trying not to fall asleep... which included, surprise!!! an important meeting at the consulate.

It looks like my time in LA is going to be spent almost exclusively with Japanese Americans over the age of 70. This makes me wary. There are hearing problems, misunderstandings, pride, and perhaps even the initial signs of dementia.

On the bright side, I haven't had to do a single bit of interpreting because everyone is functionally bilingual. I feel useless, but ultimately it's no skin off my back.

On the bright side number two, the group of people who are accompanying us bought us a multi-course Chinese dinner at a little welcome party, and it included Peking duck. I am well on my way to a third trimester food baby. I haven't felt this for a while.
