I realized during this latest break that being at school insulates me from the world in some very good ways. I've been keeping tabs on nationwide and international news, but local news and crazy violence is all pretty much filtered out when the only news sites you really visit are
nytimes.com and
slate.
I watched a lot of TV during break -- mostly Food Network and Comedy Central with occasional news programs thrown in -- and it shocked me how many times murder comes up in a single program. Granted, they are usually the same high-profile cases over and over, but... so many women get murdered in a day. The victims I heard about in the past few days were all female.
To some degree, I wonder if it's some sort of self-feeding cycle. Does sensationalizing these crimes motivate unbalanced people to commit more-- for the attention, maybe? Does it de-sensitize people, making them even a little bit more okay?
The world scares me a little bit. :/
Should I be carrying weapons wherever I go? I wish I remembered more from self-defense class.
