A/N: *sigh* Of course, I did the same thing as everybody else. I wrote somebody's first day on the job. But I just re-watched "The Boy in the Bush", and this little bunny would NOT get out of my head! So, I wrote it. And, it's actually my first Hodgins fic. I feel like I've been neglecting the poor guy! Not anymore!
It wasn’t the first time Doctor Jack Hodgins had set foot inside the Jeffersonian Institute’s Medico-Legal Lab-as part of the Cantilever Group, he was one of the Institute’s biggest donors and thus had toured it once-but it was the first time he set foot there as an employee. It was just as big and as impressive as he remembered, and it had the same sterile smell.
He deeply inhaled that smell with a satisfied smile.
It was the smell of his rebellion, of his independence from his family. Because if he really wanted to, Jack Hodgins could run the entire Medico-Legal Lab-his family had that much weight around here. And, of course, they would want him to use that weight and run the lab.
But he didn’t want to. He just wanted to be the entomologist and mineralogist-the bug and slime guy. And that’s what he was going to do. Doctor Goodman-who had hired him-didn’t have a clue who he really was. Jack wanted to keep it that way.
Smiling as he reveled in the sweet feeling of defiance, he walked across the foyer towards the heart of the lab. He hadn’t gotten far before he nearly collided with a hurrying woman. Both stopped just in time to avoid crashing into each other.
The woman’s lab coat had “Dr. Brennan” stitched on it, but he didn’t need that to recognize her. He’d heard plenty about the famous forensic anthropologist before, and had even sat in the back of one of her lectures on forensic science before.
“Doctor Brennan,” he said, holding out a hand for her to shake. “I’m-”
“Doctor Hodgins, I presume,” she cut him off. “I was told to expect you.” She thrust a sealed bag of soil in his outstretched hand. “You’re late. Get to work.” With that, she turned and walked off.
Smiling, he looked down at the bag in his hand. Right to work as just your average dirt guy.
He was definitely going to enjoy this job.
A/N 2: Oh, yes, and I know Brennan isn't technically Hodgins' boss, but in the given circumstances, I'm sure she could say she was. :)
