A Thanksgiving movie review

Nov 25, 2010 11:28

So, a very happy Thanksgiving to all my friends up north.  Hope you enjoy yourselves and eat until you explode (figuratively, please!).

So for anyone actually reading out there, I'll pop in with the next of the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die.  This one is also from 1932, and is called Me and My Gal.  Now, there is an excellent 1930's stage musical called Me and My Girl (one of the VERY few musicals I can stand), but this is not it.  Fortunately, it isn't a musical, either!

It's a romantic comedy about a wisecracking cop and a sassy waitress which... well, it works pretty well, actually.  The comedy is almost surreal at times, and the chemistry between the characters is very well played, with leading man Spencer Tracy perfect in the role.  Recommended.

A word for director Raoul Walsh: despite the fact that he cast his own brother in the film, he is one of the few directors to bat 1.000 in the series so far: both this film and Thief of Baghdad were completely enjoyable - so he's two for two so far, so I'm looking forward to his next film on the list, whatever that might turn out to be!

In other news, I wrote a further 1080 words into The Malakiad.  I'm so close I can almost feel it.  Finished chapter 20, started 21.  There are 22 planned!
