Earlier this week I got the call that my company won't be able to call me back to work. I've been furloughed for 4 months now, and I'm still officially employed and on furlough for 2 more months, but they wanted to let me know I'm on the cut list with enough time to hopefully find another job.
I do have a part-time job just starting. Back in March when I could see the signs, I applied for the 2020 Census. I was finally called a couple of weeks ago and had my first training session earlier this week. It was mostly to fill out tax forms, be told we'll be doing self-study for training, and pick up our assigned cell phones. Once that job begins, it will be 10-20 hours per week and run for 3 months or until all the non-respondents have been contacted. There were 8 people at the training but I don't know if I'll share territory with any of them.
There is also an Ag Insurance Co here in town with a listing for an office position. I actually saw it back in March so that makes me nervous. Have they just not had any applications? Are they too picky? Are they horrible to work for? I'll have to ask my neighbors, 2 older men who've lived here all their lives, about the place and who runs it and whether I should apply. But it seems like a job that my acquired skills would easily translate to.
There's still a slight chance my company will call me back. If they can do so before the end of September 2021 then I would keep my seniority, but maybe not my salary since we already had to take a certain % cut back in March. The way things stand, I won't expect to be called back.
