B-B-B-Benny & the Vamps

Now that I've had time to digest this week's installment of Supernatural, I have to say that I loved it. I love Benny, I love his weird bromance with Dean, I love Sam's possessiveness, I love the Benny/Cas dynamic, I love Sam's longing for his peaceful year with Amelia, and I love PURGATORY. I haven't Googled it yet, but I'm pretty sure Benny was whistling Wagner in that Purgatory killing scene, which makes me unreasonably happy. It all made me happy. And I have to get an icon of Purgatory Dean from this ep! And a GIF of Sam throwing that phone and yelling, "Dammit!", because...well, because.

Twenty different epic bitchfaces from Sam! Didn't know he had that many! But I'm disappointed that Dean never told Benny that, y'know, he kinda understood a thing or two about Benny's predicament, since he'd been a vampire once for a little while. What's up with that? Not sharing? And really, Sam has no business bitching about Dean keeping secrets, since I do believe Sam has kept more secrets from Dean over the last seven seasons than vice versa. Dean has a habit of immediately confessing things to Sam that he probably ought to keep secret for longer: Dad told me I might have to kill you, I traded my soul for your life, Cas says if you don't stop drinking demon blood the angels will stop you... But Sam---Sam is a good liar. The demon blood, the being back from hell for an entire year before letting Dean know, the psychic stuff...he lied/withheld for a long time before confessing/being found out.

I love 'em both, but fuck Sam.

There was a decided lack of brotherly camaraderie/joking/teasing, at least in that loving way we're used to. The teasing in the start of the episode was funny, but also a bit mean-spirited. It's as if they don't want to be together, don't want to be chasing Kevin, don't have the usual enthusiasm. I wonder if this is what the showrunners have referred to as the characters' new "maturity." If so, I get it, but it was thoroughly cancelled out by Sam's desperate reaction to the news that Dean was balls-deep in a vampire nest. That scene of him stealing that car, and driving off, worried as HELL, anxiously looking at the speedometer as it pegged 90, was priceless.

Oh, there is love...

And we end with Defiant Dean and Furious Sam in a confrontation...and fade to black. One hopes that next week sees some resolution, but then, we know better. Delicious. I want tears and screaming and make-up sex. People in hell want ice water, too.

"blood brother", purgatory dean, spn reviews, supernatural!, s8 e5, benny!, love triangle, season 8
