Baby, it's getting late, I wish you would be home by now

Things that are occupying my mind at present:

  • 'Flowers & Football Tops' by Glasvegas. Okay so the song is about a parent being told that their son has been murdered, but I loves it so. The stirring arena-echoing epic sound of it hooked me from the beginning and now I'm finding myself listening to it on loop over and over again. Also fun for listening to the bits where the lead singer's accent slips into strong Scottish.

  • Speaking of accents - Oi told yew. The first episode of the new series of Underbelly is great, but the lead actor's Kiwi accent isn't. It's rather distracting for me to hear him say things like "I'm fuxing it", "Us Kaiwais gotta stuuck toguther" etc. Someone in that article said that he's trying to sound like what a typical Aussie thinks Kiwis sound like, and it's true - he drops his vowels so badly that what he lacks in realism he makes up for in cringiness. That's my only gripe with the series though, it's fascinating to think that this Kiwi guy got away with what he did for so long. Crazy.

  • Speaking of Kiwi accents (kinda), I am loving the new series of Flight of the Conchords. It's not without its faults but on the whole I think it's a tighter, better looking, slightly funnier series than the first. I'm glad they're finishing it after two series (one hopes) because I think any more would've been strained and clearly not as funny. Best episode so far? Hmmm Episode 5. Best line? I'm not gonna ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

  • On the topic of TV shows, Peep Show and The Mighty Boosh. Rob left me his Series 1 - 5 box set of PS when he was here and wow, that show is brilliant - with each series it just gets funnier and funnier and both the writing and direction become flawless, it's great. I find Mark Corrigan really endearing, he does his best to stay straight and then Jez just comes along and fucks everything up. Super Hans has to be my favourite character tho, he is brilliant. I'm sitting here giggling at things that happen in the show; I wish I could provide a clip but almost all the Peep Show stuff on You Tube has had its embedding disabled.
And the Boosh? I still love it and find myself noticing new things each time I re-watch an episode, which I find is a useful way of gaguing if a tv show is any good or not. "....put away those firey biscuits"

  • The shit going on in Northern Ireland right now. When this whole Current Economic Climate/Credit Crunch/Recession/Deepening Economic Crisis/whatever other name everyone has for it started, I thought of how I wanted to be close to Rob when I moved over and possibly settle in Northern Ireland and the thought, "Shit, what if things flare up in the North again because of this fucking recession" did cross my mind. That unfortunately appears to have come true. Violence is obviously born out of people being disenfranchised with the government or economic system and in their desperation turn to those willing to give answers who have a fuckload of charisma but are obviously batshit crazy (see: Nazi Germany). I kinda thought the same thing might happen in the North and what do you know, it has. And I think it's only going to get worse with Ireland being in a really fucking bad position economically right now; many a time I would be having a chat in a bar with the Irish and they'd have no problems telling me how Sinn Fein & the IRA purposefully preyed on young men low socio-economic areas to recruit consituents/members. It's bollocks isn't it? I also note how the National Front are now coming out of the woodwork in the Kapiti region to recruit young people, although they're not much of a threat because they'd just get their asses laughed out of town, the clowns.
Anyway my point is that Northern Ireland - and especially Belfast & Antrim - looks like an increasingly unlikely place for me to settle.

Hmmm, I think that's about it.
