WHY I LOVE HAIRSPRAY

My Love For Hairspray

this morning, as we baked some stuff, i put hairspray on because we love it and its better than just listening to music on my comp.

every time it comes on, i get chills of excitement! certain movies do that and this one does it for a few reasons:

1) the music is so infectious. it just makes me wanna get up and dance. i cant sit still during this movie.

2) despite the flaws and scenes in the movie that drag, the movie is full of little moments that are PERFECT and make me want to edit something as amazing this.

examples:

the minutes between the first two numbers where the backbeat matches all of tracy's movements (or vice versa) and the building crescendo of the music just before tracy and penny turn on the tv to see CORNY COLLINS.

during 'i can hear the bells', when she says "we'll be french kissing" and we see link lick his hand before smoothing his hair. love it. that whole song shows off nikki blonksy's comedic skill.

during Ladie's choice - just pretty much that whole scene. the cutaways to character reactions are hilarious; link's swiveling hips would make anyone swoon; corny's facial expressions are too funny; and the moment where link and tracy eye-fuck each other, pretty much perfect. oh and right after corny looks at tracy and it cuts to penny running down the street screaming - not only hilarious but great!

when tracy says "i'd make every day negro day", the cut to velma's reaction shot makes me laugh every time.

when velma is told to fix the problem, she goes 'UGH" and stomps her foot. on that exact beat, the song 'new girl in town' starts.

during "the new girl in town", the 2nd new number (both of which i think fit in perfect), the edit between the white girls and black girls was smooth.

the moment when penny meets seaweed and she sucks on the sucker and right as the beat of the song hits right when she raises her eyebrows. brilliant.

during "run and tell that", all the close ups on the feet dancing - actually thats a motif running through the whole movie i LOVE, all the closeups on the feet! - but anyway, during Run and Tell That, when they are dancing in the hallways, the way they slide through so smoothly.

though there is a part of this song i dont like. when they bounce through the doors its not on the main beat and it doesnt make any sense since they'd been cutting on the beat in all the previous songs.

during the big blonde and beautiful reprise, when edna looks in the mirror and flips her hair and does a little come hither thing, i love that. i really enjoy john travolta's intepretation of edna - very feminine and womanly.

the whole interaction between christopher walken and john travolta cracks up b/c you can see how much wilbur loves edna. and no matter what movie he's in, walken has this way of pronouncing words in a funny way. love him.

when edna goes in to see if tracy is awake, and finds her missing, and she runs out of the room, slips and runs into the door way - i really hope it was an outtake they decided to keep in. :)

"Without Love" is full of goodies, mostly lyrics but still good visuals: seaweed whips out the knife; link singing into the candy bar before making out with tracy's picture; the looks on link's face when he says "laringitus"; the way tracy says "my mother on a diet"; and lots of good cuts at the end of the song.

corny whacks amber in the face. haha.

when allison janey falls over the coffee table trying to clean her tv off.

the way corny says "asterick, down at the bottom". always makes me smile.

edna's tina turner dance. awesome! boy can she shake and shimmy.

when amber falls down during "you cant stop the beat", the look she gives the audience to show she is ok and not hurt is hilarious.

and the titles at the end! SO creative and fun! i wish i could do them.

some of the oneliners:

"you have to vote for a person, corny, not one of the himalayas!"

when tracy gets sent to detention and link stands up for her and goes "kiss my ass?" so he can get sent to detention too. kills me.

"it took me five years to figure out you were flirting!"

"If you want to be famous, learn how to take blood out of car upholstery. That's a skill you can take right to the bank." - now this is in both of the original versions, but the fact that john travolta gets to say it makes me laugh so much BECAUSE in Pulp Fiction, they have to hire someone to get blood out of the car upholstery!

"tracy i'm in love with you no matter what you weigh" - this kills me and my bro every time.

"so you two better prepare yourselves for a whole lot of ugly coming at you from a neverending parade of stupid"
"so you met my mom?"

"i risked communicable diseases, she'll certainly risk jail".

things i didnt like:
amanda bynes dress at the end. wtf? was it to cover the fact that she cant dance?

the weird cut during run and tell that.

the velma flashback dance during "miss baltimore crabs".

i'm not a huge fan of how they did Welcome to the 60s but it is cute. i just dont really like that song a lot i guess.

while the recording of the slow song 'i know where i've been' is really beautiful, it slows down the movie and could have been cut shorter i think.

this movie is definitely on the list of movies that cheer me up. right up there with Singin in the Rain and Empire Records. I could watch it on repeat for days.
