Hehe, the first pic is exactly the sort of thing I grew up on, and the second set are the sort of thing I changed to when I started cooking for myself, lol. I've only recently discovered asparagus myself, and I enjoy it a lot. It's nice to branch out~!
BTW I'd call it a pepper, but in other places they call them bell peppers or capsicum. They're tasty anyway. :9
Talking to other people our age, it seems a lot of them grew up on boiled potatoes, veggies and meat - and gave it up the moment they moved out. All my friends and various cousins did, at least! *laughs* I've had plenty of 'normal' white asparagus, but never the green ones. They make for a nice variation. :)
In Dutch it's called paprika, and peppers are, well. Chili peppers? The hot stuff, at least. I wasn't sure what to call them, since I've seen a multitude of names for them. (Capsicum is a new one for me, though!) But yes, very tasty. I'm eating them every chance I get, now - never got any of them before, because both my parents disliked them.
Haha, my diet was, when I was growing up, a lot more 'traditional' than a lot of my friends, lol. I never ate pasta till I was pretty old. When I was little it was what you made collages with! My boyfriend cooks a lot now though, lol, and he's quite... inventive. But usually in a good way! Though I have to say, I still do love a good roast dinner... :9
...There's white asparagus? :O The kind we get here is always green!
Same here - I introduced my mom to lasagna a couple of years ago... she'd never had it before I decided to make it for dinner one weekend. We had rice once a week (usually on Sundays), and that was terribly exciting - and when I got into my teens, spaghetti as well.
My first reaction was "Whaddayamean, there's white asparagus? Of course there is!", but then I realized that that might just be because we live in the part of the Netherlands where they're grown, so it's something I take for granted... and just as you only know the green ones, I only knew the whites. *laughs* (I even spent one week in my teens harvesting the damn things. My back didn't thank me, ouch.)
My mum keeps saying "When are you going to make all these interesting foods for me?" but as I never stay at her house and she never comes to mine... she'll have to wait, lol. She was always a bit more adventurous than my dad at least, lol. My dad refused to even go anywhere near garlic. Ironic for a person who was quite keen on France... ^^'
I think I saw white asparagus on a Honjani ep once, lol. I'm sure they were all very excited to see it... XD
I had my dad over a couple of weeks ago, coincidentally the day after the picture with the two bowls of rice was taken - so the second was standing in the fridge for that evening and he'd seen it when he fetched the milk for his coffee. Apparently, when he came home that evening, he told the mom that he was jealous of my food... it looked and smelled so delicious he spontaneously got hungry. *laughs* (Mom always cooks without using any herbs or spices - when they just got married she had doctor's orders to go saltless for a while, and she just never got back to using them - which wasn't a bad thing considering my dad's sensitive stomach.)
If you're a fan of France/French food, I think it'll be different to stay away from the garlic! It's not in every dish, but in a considerable amount nonetheless. Did he like the French kitchen, or just stick to the English one in his quest to avoid garlic
