Bah.

Just bah.

I'm not really ready to admit that I'm anticipating my return to Littleton, because there's still some fun to be had in SoFlo. But I have been getting a bit lonely the past week or so. The only person "my age" that I really can hang out with is Racheal. I'm beginning to miss my friends in L-Town and thereabouts. The mayhem had in Ryan's garage, trips to Subway with the Bopinator, frag time on Halo with Tuity and his LSC peeps, all-around jackassery with the Lincoln crew, and I owe the Connecticut group a visit when I return as well. Like I said, I'm not quite ready to leave Florida, but I sure won't be complaining when I do leave in 10 days.

Anyway, I went to a high school football game with Rae and her friends last night. It was Rae's high school, Taravella, which was having their homecoming game, against Pampano Beach. Living in the podunk north country which is pretty much anti-football, I have to admit that I've never been to a football game... ever. No high school, college, or pro game. I've never seen football in person until last night. That should come as a shock considering how nuts I am about the game. So it was quite an experience for me. Rae and her friends went off to do.. girly things or whatever while I found a spot on the bleachers and got into the game. As far as the game went, it was pretty good. Pampano had a good QB--one of the best in the state, according to the announcer--and torched the Taravella secondary with some high accuracy passes. Taravella was the other way around, going with a more smash mouth approach of pounding the football on the ground. It was 13-7 Pampano at halftime. The announcer had mentioned a number of times how Taravella was an incredible second half team. And he wasn't kidding. The defense really stepped it up, getting to Pampano's QB on a number of occasions for some sacks and bad throws resulting in a pair of interceptions. They also had a HUGE goal line stand and caused the running back to fumble the ball on the 2 for a recovery and a touchback. On the offensive side of the ball, they continued their ground game and eventually broke down the Pampano defense, allowing the Taravella RB to get some big runs. Taravella ended up winning 20-13. So it was a good game for my first one witnessing in person.

After the game, the marching band did their "halftime show", which had to be moved to after the game due to homecoming announcements (king, queen, court, etc.). And the synopsis of the show goes as such: ... Wow. They were really, really good. It helps that there were a good 250 of them in the band. Their sound was amazing. And they were all in motion in very similar fashion to any given college band's halftime show. In fact, I bet they could rival any such band in sound because it just blew me away. I did happen to pick up one little miscue in the trumpets though. But having played the insrument for 10 years, I might've been the only person to here it. I also had to give props to their percussion section as they sounded especially sharp, especially on the ad-lib percussion arrangement as they were marching off the field. And they also had something I've never seen before in a marching band, hell... even a concert band. There was 3 musical percussion instruments on the field: a glachenspiel, marimba, and xylophone. And they were all pros at it. I heard their part and watched them play it. A lot of their stuff went far against what the other band was doing, throwing in tricky triplets and 16th notes. But all of them were in sync and in tune, and it just sounded great. The whole thing was explosive.

I have to mention this too because, to me, it was out of the ordinary. I took a seat at the 40 yard line on the bleachers. A couple minutes later, some random girl sat down next to me and asked if I was a Yankees fan, noted by my stylish mother of pearl base with navy blue logo Yankees cap. I told her "Hell yeah". She said it was about time she found another fan in the area, which I thought was kinda odd considering I had seen a couple other guys toting Yankees paraphinalia. She then began talking to me about the past season. We talked about Small and Chacon and how they saved our ass this year and how A-Rod should win MVP. Naturally, I knew more about specifics and other intangibles than she did. I knew I was getting to deep when she responded with "...Oh. Right". After about 20 minutes talking Yankees, her friends came and took her away. But not before yelling at me that the Yankees suck. Everyone always has to include that. That left me in wonder of what just happened.
I kinda got a look into what she said about having a hard time finding anyone else who rooted for the Yanks. Hell, even the announcer overseeing the game took joy in updating everyone in the stadium that the Yankees were losing. I distincly remember him telling the audience that Randy Johnson was "getting lit up like a Christmas tree", and that it "must be easy to be a Yankee fan with a $200 million dollar payroll" while adding "It's easy to tell when it's October because that's when all the Yankee hats come out". I had to laugh at his puny insults. Besides, the learned later from Rae that the announcer was also her Red Sox loving basketball coach, so I had the last laugh considering the Sox had been swept out of the playoffs earlier in the evening.

Oh yeah, DAHA Red Sox. The White Sox made you, ESPN analysts, the Boston Globe, and every Tom Dick and Harry who thought the White Sox would just lay down because they almost blew it look like chumps. So much for a repeat. I take great joy in knowing the Red Sox are done. The only thing I would've liked more would be if it was the Yankees delivering a 4 game sweep in the ALCS. But them being out is quite good enough. After coming home from the football game, I made this pleasant spectacle:

Serving as my desktop at this point in time.
I know there are several on my friends' list and who check out this who are Red Sox fans and may find the previous badmouthing and picture to be either offensive or downheartening. To which I say to you: Too bad. The sting of last year still lingers so this year feels oh-so good with them not in it. Not only not in it, but totally dominated by the White Sox. It sucks to be you, but for the time being, it's great to be me (well, being down 2-1 to the Angels isn't so great, but seeing no BoSox up in the list feels damn good).

Of course, the Red Sox losing won't feel as great if the Yankees lose too. Last night was just nasty. The weather was bad, but the Yankees' production was worse. Randy Johnson was brought in to bring greatness in playoffs and he was just obliterated by the Angels' bats. Defense is also a big issue, case in point, Game 2 with 3 errors. What good is a ground ball pitcher if you dont' have a good defense? The offense hasn't been at it's best either. The only person who really has lifted the Yankees has been Robinson Cano. 6 RBIs in the series. I guess he answered the question of whether he can perform in the playoffs in his rookie year. Certainly the series MVP if the Yanks can pull out a series win. Actually, check that. If the Yanks can push it to Game 5, and Moose has another brilliant game like he did in Game 1, I give him the ALDS MVP. I would'nt count out the Yankees right now if I was anyone. But they do have a rocky path in front of them. I still have faith they'll come through though. They haven't lost 3 in a row since the end of August. It's time for Shawn Chacon to be the rock of the rotation and move the series back to Anaheim... or Los Angeles, wherever the Angels are playing this year.

And I do believe I speak for everyone when I say...
FUCK
YEAH
Hockey's back, baby!
And the Habs are already 2-0. As are the Panthers who just defeated the defending champion Lightning. There are a number of new rules in the game, resulting in what the league hopes to lead to more scoring, which is what fans love to see. Such rules include two-line passing, goalie's movements restricted to a certain zone outside the net, less equipment on goalies, each blue line moved back 4 feet, as well as a new rule to overtime, which is my personal favorite... If a game needs to go to overtime, they're will be 1 OT period, and if it's tied after the extra period, the teams will compete in a shootout to decide the winner (the loser still gets 1 point for forcing overtime just like last year). It's unfortunate that hockey had the lockout last year because now no one is picking up their games. The only national channel picking up games this year is NBC. No hockey on ESPN, ABC, CBS, or FOX. That makes me saddened. There's always FSN though. Unfortunately, when I return to NH, that'll only be for Bruins games, whom I hate. I like it down here so I can watch Panthers' games on FSN. I watched the opening night against the Thrashers. Roberto Luongo has played excellently. Two games, two shutouts. I love hockey. I hated everyone saying "Who cares?" during the lockout. I care, dammit. And now it's back, and I'm happy. Huzzah. I definitely have to make it up to Montreal to catch the Habs in action.

Let's complete the trifecta, and I'll talk about football for a second. New York Giants 3-1. Fuck yeah. The other three: Rams, Seahawks, and Bills? ... ... Not so much.

Anyway.
