for the late bloomers

I can't watch "Boardwalk Empire" at the same time as most people, so I'm just going to leave my disjointed reaction post here, and hopefully it will mutate into a discussion post.

Okay, so "Broadway Limited": My love for this show grows exponentially with each episode.

Hearing Steve Buscemi say, "What does 'motherfucker' mean?" made my life just a little more complete.

Eli trying to smother the shot man was strangely hilarious. Also the dentist giving him cocaine shots. And come to think of it, there was a strong medical theme going for a while, with poor Lucky's visit to the wang doctor. Oh god, I was wincing so hard.

Van Alden continues to be fucking creepy (I think it was Eli's officer who referred to him as the one with the "big head"?) and amusing at the same time, although he almost MADE ME CRY when he was trying to get the shot man to talk. Jeez, that was excruciating. Then his little sermon thing when the guy died and the other agent interjecting with perfect comic timing, "Isn't he Jewish?" I like that guy. The insult in Yiddish was a bonus!

Also, Van Alden's scene with his wife at the dinner table. Possibly the single most Awesome Dinner Scene in the History of Dinner Scenes, EVER. It was sad but it had me cackling in a sad way. "The roast tastes good." Yes. *nods sagely* Yes.

Surely, the only reason why the writers made Margaret a dress shop girl was so that it was an easy excuse for Lucy to get naked.

(Oh yeah, Max Casella! It was nice to see him in an Authoritative Position in a Pinstriped Suit! My many years of only seeing him as Vinnie Delpino, Racetrack Higgins, and little Benny Fazio who got beaten into a pulp and then whacked Tim Daly in the head with a binder may finally be dissipated.)

Every dramatic scene was wonderful and delivered essential storytelling gravitas: Jimmy and Angela; Jimmy and Nucky in his office (you really felt that Jimmy had let him down badly); Nucky and Gillian, oh my.

Jjimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy. What're we gonna do with you. He's got the Feds on his heels, and now he's got Rothstein's boy Lucky after him. I doubt he's going to fare any better in Chicago. They don't know where he's gone, though. This means they're going to have to find out from other people. This will probably not be pretty.

And Nucky and Chalky White at the end. Incredible. At this point, I'm trying to gauge whether Nucky actually cares (not many white men in his position would) or if he's just depending on the African-American vote in the next election. Nucky did actually strive to gain their favor by providing for the Black community. But since now that he's in business with them, he has no choice but to keep this covered up. Albeit in a very gruesome, heartbreaking way, which obviously disturbed him, when Eli shot the dead body.

The symbolism of the final scene, of Nucky's muddy footprints leading back to him, just floored me. It was one of those endings, after a very rich and heavy episode, that just rooted me to the spot all the way through the end credits and the funeral dirge that played over them.

Shit's about to get real.
