some day, when you're awfully low, and the world is cold, what will bring a glow is just thinking of

I was walking over to Saint Charles hall at around five today to check my mail for the first time when I ran into these people that I have started to become friends with, Kev-o, Sarah, and Theresa. They asked me if I was going to dinner and more to be social than because I was hungry I said sure.

We walked out the door of Guad (my dorm hall) and were walking up the hill toward the rest of campus (Carroll is on a hill with Saint Charles at the top) we heard this music playing. It was guitar, rock it sounded like; I think it might have been Green Day. I didn't notice it at first because of course, you kind of fade things like that out when you're having a conversation with somebody, but then, each of us became aware of how loud the music was. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. "A loudspeaker?" someone asked. But we didn’t see any loudspeakers anywhere. They were all going to head to the dining hall to get dinner and I told them that I would meet them there in a bit; I wanted to check my mail first.

"Wait, I have to know where that music is coming from, it sounds live, this could be cool." said Sarah.
"I’m headed up that way; I've got to check my mail. Come on," I said "lets go."

We raced up the steps to the grassy courtyard in from of Saint Charles. It was exhilarating. For some reason, I got this huge smile on my face running up those steps. They are quite tall, and steep, so you can’t see the top of them from the bottom, or the ground floor of St. Charles. It felt like some sort of race, something from a movie; running up the main stairs of a college campus to find the first great adventure of freshmen year. I almost laughed out loud.

As the grassy courtyard came into view, we discovered where the music was coming from. This guy had set up two amps on the Front steps of St. Charles and was playing his guitar. He was all by himself, off in his own world, just rockin out. There were two other guys watching. Each sitting in separate areas on the grass, each in his own world just listening to the music.

"This is so cool." I thought, with this half-smile on my face.
"yea." said Kev-o "it really is"

We all just stood there for a while, leaning on concrete pediments, just listening to this lone guy rock out on his guitar. I looked around me at where I was and my smile grew bigger. The sun was out, and bright. A great five o’clock sunlight. Not harsh, just warm, and yellow-orange. The sky was this bright blue, and the mountains seemed to stretch of into infinity. I fell like I was on top of the world. Listening to a guy play his guitar on top of the hill in the middle of Montana. For the first time ever, things felt right, just for a hint of a second. I have my whole life ahead of me, the possibilities are truly endless.

"My friends may be hundreds of miles away." I thought to myself. "But right now, I am just going to let go, and listen to rock music, being played by a guy, jumping up and down on the front steps."
